Following. If we have a second we'll need to bunk them bc the room pretty small.

Love those beds @anagram!

@2littlepumpkins: yea as I sit on the idea more it makes me nervous too. I am the type that loves to leave my kids alone and having a bunk would mean more rules more regulations and more supervision which I hate.

@travelgirl1: glad to know your childhood experience. See my reply above- I'm rethinking bunk as well!

@SweetiePie: yes it's something I've thought about! We already have a twin floor bed.. maybe thinking I should have gotten a full so they could share lol. But my youngest might get annoyed at my squirmy oldest haha.

@gotkimchi: thanks! I'll definitely have to show my husband and consider this.

@mrs.kiwi: it's this one in white, we got it on clearance at a local furniture store and they sell it everywhere. Google ne kids or hillsdale.

ETA we picked this one because the trundle part has 4 sides which I like so it fits securely underneath and nothing falls out

Would your two older kids ever be able to share a bed?
My sister got one of the bunk beds that is a full sized on the bottom and a twin on top. So for a long time her older two boys just slept in the full sized together. And once they were comfortable with it the older one moved to the top bunk. But sometimes they still chose/choose to sleep in the bottom together. It's really sweet.
If all 3 will eventually share anyway that would fit 3 kids at once.

We were wondering about this for our four and two-year-old last month. Ultimately even the lowest bunk bed scared me, my kids are climbers and risk takers and pretty crazy, I could imagine them chasing each other up to the top bunk and falling off. We decided on a twin and a toddler bed side-by-side. However, when I was younger, my sister and I had a trundle bed and I don't remember it being a problem at all, apart from once when I puked in the night over the side of my bed onto the mattress below  But it wasn't hard to pull out and put away every night and was comfy enough.

@mrs.kiwi: I think it's like 5 1/4". If you Google there are others on amazon.

Fwiw we've decided against bunking our kiddos for the next couple years probably. We're planning on L shapes beds instead. We have climbers and daredevils.. we both agree that WE wouldnt have had a problem with the kura as kids (and both slept on bunks pretty young too) but our kids are just something else. There's not much they won't climb and dd is in the habit of jumping off of stuff (pretty recent development)

@mrs.kiwi: We're currently looking for bunk bed for my 4.5 and 2 year old. I was recently at Land of the Nod and asked if it's common for little ones to sleep on a trundle, instead of a bunk. She advised that a trundle is more for occasional sleep but not recommended for daily sleep because the mattress is only 2 inches so it's not as comfortable. Maybe trundles are different at other stores but for that reason I would choose a bunk.

@Mrs. Lion: thanks! Yes we are short on space.. but not enough to make me move. We will just have to get rid of things and rearrange for the next few months til baby comes!

@looch: I'll check it out for inspo!

@T.H.O.U.: I love the idea but def don't have room for two twins right now. Love that it's so versatile though!

@hellobeeboston: how much time does it take to take the trundle out and in? I thought it only took literally a few seconds but maybe I'm wrong. Also is it heavy? I have arm and shoulder issues and that makes me lean toward bunking them so I don't have any more extra labor to do..

@shellio: so sweet that they all want to share with each other. Hope my kids love their new baby sis or bro!

@Anagram: so sweet for two girls! Unfortunately I can't fit two twins right now.. I'd also only consider the kura bunk bc it's so much lower and I'm hoping wheneeevvver we move I won't have to do any bunk bed style. But space is hard to come by in my area so maybe one day I'll have to do a similar set up again.

@mrs.kiwi: you can get a set that is flexible, so you don't have to commit to one floor plan. We bought a set on Wayfair similar to this Walmart set. They are twin beds that can just be twin beds, that can convert to bunk beds, and that come with a trundle. We have our beds just like two twin beds for now, but we bought the bunk bed kit so that when our oldest turns 5, they can have bunk beds and more floor space. And we bought 1 trundle and store boxes under the other twin.

It's nice to have the flexibility without having to buy all new furniture.

We have a Kura for our 3yo and 5yo. We got it when the oldest was 3 - they've both slept in it from a young 3 in the top bunk. We have it in the corner so against the wall on 2 sides, with a removable gate/wall thing on the 3rd (long) side. Ours has a full thickness mattress in it but I guess if you bought a thin mattress you might not need a gate. They also sell a tent that goes above the bed which might serve as protection from falling off. We love the Kura.

We actually have 2 because our vision was that each boy would have the top bunk to sleep in and below the bed would be their own "private" space. However it hasn't worked out that way and we have one in bunk form and one "upside down" in the lower configuration, we only have 2 mattresses so they actually have a crib mattress in the lower area of the bunk and both boys rotate through all 3 beds. They've already asked when their sister (currently 20 months) can join them, if she wants to I'd be thrilled if they all three shared a room in about a year because it will give me a craft room. :)

We got an Ikea bunk bed with a trundle. The higher bunk is slightly higher than the Kura height, but it does allow more configurations.

Right now, we are only using the bottom, kids are 2.75 and 5 months. We have no plans to move until almost 6 and 3.5 and we are already talking about #3. If all goes well, kids will be almost 4.5 and 2 when we transition. My oldest is not a climber and very much safety conscious.

At age 4 and 2 (when we put the kids together) we did bunk beds but have them separated as twins for now. Works great with a built in rail for the younger child. Lots of under bed storage. And when they get a bit older and need more floor space for legos and things we can bunk them.

Another idea is to look at a Bunk bed with a trundle.

You can get trundles from Pottery Barn Kids (take a look for inspo, search "camp trundle") that are completely separate from the bed and can be rolled away from the bed they're stored under.

Think mattress in a box on wheels.

@mrs.kiwi: I'm sure you guys have valid fears about it, especially after hearing stories from friends. We have a little dare devil so I was a bit worried too, but for us it has been awesome and my fears turned out to be unfounded. His mattress is very thin, so it is impossible for him to roll out. And even if he did fall down the steps on the ladder the fall is so short that it doesnt concern me. My 2 year old climbs in and out really easily as well. It sounds like you guys are in a tough spot space wise. I would be happy to answer any questions if it might help.

We plan on the Kura when we start room sharing our two girls. I think a trundle would take up too much room in our small rooms and I am lazy and would not want to put it back away every day. I had a trundle under my bed as a kid but it as just for sleepovers with friends. I can't imagine it as a long term sleep solution.

@mrs.kiwi: We are definitely thinking about it! Our first two have a good relationship and have taken to room sharing really well, so it almost seems natural for us to put the third one in there with them. They have other spaces to spread out during their waking hours, or when they're really sick. We'll see! :)

Editing to add, our younger child is too little to articulate an opinion, but I asked our four year old what we should do when we have the next baby (which is still sort of theoretical to her, I'm only 15w) and she said share.

@brownepiano: mine are super into climbing too.. my husband can picture them falling and hurting themselves when they are hyper/tired.

@gotkimchi: lol!! May I ask how old they are?

@maddyz: someone I know kept their kid in a crib sized until 5 and he was fine!

@Charm54: good to know ur 4yo does well

@2littlepumpkins: oh really will you try to room share all 3? I don't know anyone in real life who does this but lots of people on the internet seem to do it just fine. They're so young I don't think they'll care and hoping they'll make wonderful childhood memories together. I'm positive about it bc my first two roomshare so well.

@Mrs. Lion: yes he has seen it! We wouldn't even consider a traditional bunk- way too high. My husband tends to be more cautious and concerned about safety than I am (we complement each other haha). Doesn't help my friend just shared a bunk bed horror story with us 😞.

My 4 year old is in the Kura bed and he loves it. I woukd put my 2 year old in the too too, honestly. Has your husband seen one in person? They are so much lower than they seem in pictures. That would be my recommendation. Top bunk in the Kura for the older, floor bed underneath for the younger.

We have a KURA in one room so that my girls can share a room when guests come to town. It's not as high as a traditional bunk bed and my almost 4yo sleeps on the top fine

We're in the same spot and planning a bunk bed. It's possible the baby will just go in her own room if she's a terrible sleeper, but we've had a good experience with my older two sharing. We're planning on 4 yo on top bunk (she's excited now!) and my nearly 2 yo will go on the bottom and we will transition before baby needs the crib so if he needs to use the crib some nights then he can, it'll be there.
