@keiki_mama: Thanks for asking! I feel fine : ) My sister continued to have some bathroom issues so she called her doctor who basically said not to worry unless she started having a fever or being sick to her stomach.

@yoursilverlining: I think you are right. I haven't eaten much fatty meat and definitely don't make it a habit to eat fries, so it could have easily just been that combo!

yes, how are you doing today?

I'm inclined to agree with your husband re: fever/puking. I've eaten rare steak and medium rare hamburgers several times during pregnancy and never gotten sick or felt sick after. It might have been something else in the burger, but I wouldn't go straight to listeria as a first concern. If you are not eating a lot of red meat lately, it also may have just been heavy for your slowed digestive system to deal with.

@Winniebee I forgot your hubby is a doctor! haha :) I agree with his assessment and if you feel okay and think the worst is over I wouldn't call. I will admit I had a lovely medium filet at the gala last weekend and it was so good! :) I felt good the next day too!

Oh, and I know that the incubation period for food borne illnesses can be less than 24 hours. My husband is also a doc (not an OB though!) and I asked him of course and he says unless I have a fever or am puking, I'm fine. But I still worry and just wonder if anyone else has had similar experiences or ate less than well done beef and ended up ok.

@ecogirl: Thanks! I guess my hesitation is that eating a burger followed by a gurgly stomach the next day (and one soft stool episode) doesn't qualify for a doctor's call, does it? I dunno I just feel like I bug my doctor so much and if I'm not sick she would be wondering why I was calling....

I also want to add that this is a very nice internet community. Unless you are a doctor though I really caution anyone from giving medical advice even if it seems harmless. I know TKSJewelry was trying to help but saying that it takes 24 hours for any food borne illness to develop is dangerous. Respectfully, of course. :)

@Tksjewelry Actually there are many pathogens that work much faster than 24 hours. That's an old wives tale. Clostridium occurs within 8 - 24 hours and can be found in meats and poultry. Staph occurs within 1 - 8 hours. Salmonella occurs 12 - 36 hours after eating. So for @Winniebee please do not discount a food borne illness being at cause especially if your sister has the same symptoms. The good news is that Listeria has an incubation period of a few days at earliest :) I may not be a doctor now but please OP do not get medical advice off of the internet. Even mine :) As you can see, there are a lot of misconceptions with laypeople that can get you stressed without reason or make you act haphazardly. I would always call your OBGYN. Feel better!

I would think the gurgly is from the burger itself - the grease and all that. I ask for no-pink when I get a burger (very rarely) and get medium now when I get a steak. Ground beef is just scary whether you're pregnant or not. I would not worry about listeria.

@winniebee: There have been a number of pregnant women on here or Weddingbee that said that they ate burgers or steak at medium/medium well throughout their pregnancy and the baby was a-okay.

@tksjewelry: @carrieknitscake: Thanks...but isn't it weird that we BOTH had stomach issues today?

I would be so upset if not ordering my burger medium well causes harm to my baby! (Listeria = bad news for pregnant women and babies...)

You should be fine unless you start having mild flu like symptoms! I ate a ton of no no's when I was preggers. :P But luckily didn't get sick.

@tksjewelry: I agree. Grease does awful things to my stomach. There's one restaurant here that I just can't eat at because I always get Cozy Corner Diner's revenge without fail. I had a burger and greasy onion rings and fries last night. My stomach did some fun stuff today even with a burger cooked to well done.

Other than the grease, that is not enough time for something in your food to affect you. It takes at the very least 24 hours for any food born illness to develope. I wouldn't worry too much about it unless you start to run a fever.

Last night my sister and I split a cheeseburger at a restaurant (she's pregnant, too). We ordered it medium (thinking they usually overcook burgers). It was definitely medium and even more pink than I would have liked, but it was dark and I couldn't really tell so I didn't send it back. I ate most of it. We both had some bathroom issues this morning (sorry, TMI!) and are attributing it to the cheeseburger. My stomach was just a little gurgly this morning and I felt a little off. I should add that I haven't eaten much red meat at all lately - maybe like once every three weeks (just not craving it is all).

My sister is a third time mom and should be calmer than me, but she's more of a nervous nelly than I am and now she's worried we have listeria. In all honesty, what's the risk? What can we do now? I really don't want to bother my doctor unless I'm actually sick (which I'm not).

Help?!
