@daniellemybelle: My LC said that if you see a white line where the nipple comes out from the areaola (sp?) , then it's too small.

Thanks everyone - I got a nyastin cream but I don't think it was thrush after all, since it went away on its own.

The vinegar solution is great for relieving pain. It got me through the weekend before I could get ahold of the midwives to call a prescription in. I hope it isn't thrush.

If it is thrush, you could try wiping your nipples with a vinegar solution or coconut oil after each feed, you should also keep them dry, get some sunlight on them and make sure you change your breast pads frequently (thrush loves a moist, warm environment!)

I can tell you that I probably had thrush for ten days before I infected LO so both you and LO will need to be treated.

I think it's more common for flanges to be too big than too small, but I'm not 100% on that. All I know is nursing at the beginning was PAINFUL- I cracked and bled, and cried each time LO latched (ended up being because of tongue and lip ties). What helped me so much was putting small squares of plastic wrap over lanolin cream on my nipples, after every single feed. Seriously, I almost stopped nursing before I did that, but the plastic kept the lanolin on there and let me heal properly. In the case it is your pump, do you need to pump this early, or can you get a little more settled in with nursing first? Good luck, mama, I hope you feel better soon!

I woke up to nurse tonight with sharp shooting & burning pain in my nipples, moreso on the left. My aerolas are swollen & puffy. This coincides with my first day of pumping & I am most positive the flanges are too small. Still, this pain seems pretty intense for just some chafing from two pumping sessions. The symptoms line up with thrush but the baby doesn't have any symptoms.

I am going to call my CNM tomorrow but I'm hoping it's just the pump... Anyone experience this?
