I'm glad the topic started, driving it is! And just thought of 2017 trip, even with the kids being 4 and 2, and the buses with no belts on a six hour bumpy ride isn't ideal. We got the idea to rent a private van with our own driver instead!
Thanks for the input everyone.

Yeah...without even a lap belt I don't think I would take my kids on the bus for long distances.

@Snowybreeze: I'd still rather take a 4 and 2 year old on a bus without car seats than a 3 month old and 2 year old. 3 months is so tiny! 4 years seems huge to me since I just have a newly 2 year old.

@oliviaoblivia: I think we are definitely leaning more towards just driving now. I feel safer that way and we can bring a lot more with us, including our awesome new joovy stroller, yay :)

@foodnerd81: haha, DD will be 4 and DS will be 2, not that much bigger!

@regberadaisy: I used to take Peter pan buses a lot,l and don't remember belts but it's been a while, maybe I just never noticed them.

I've never been on a bus with belts before.
Honestly I wouldn't feel comfortable doing long distance on a bus with an unrestrained three month old.

@regberadaisy: I used to take greyhound and bolt bus from NYC to boston and I don't remember ever seeing belts at all. And they went pretty fast on the highway. Maybe other bus lines are different?

@Foodnerd81: I would think long distance busses would at least have a belt that goes around your stomach? There's a version that works with vehicles that only have a lap belt.

@regberadaisy: but most buses won't have seatbelts at all, right?

@Snowybreeze: 2017 is SOOOOO far away! Your kids will be so much bigger by then.

@Snowybreeze: yikes! Visit family?
I recently saw a blow up car seat with a 5 point harness that's coming soon. I remembering thinking it's better than nothing when traveling to a country with no car seat requirements. Let me see if I can dig it up.

Lol, we need some practice with it now, because in 2017 we're taking a 20 something hour flight to vietnam, then another 6 hour bus ride (much worst than to new York, 6 hours of bumpy roads allll the way).
Although, right now we aren't ruling out just driving.

Long distance bus travel kinda sounds torturous to me with young kids! I seriously considered it for a 8 hour trip to NYC. I'd rather do Amtrak?

Following, because I've always wondered this and actually avoided buses for travel because I just can't figure it out...

I've wondered the same thing. I've taken a city bus with LO, in a carrier and in the stroller, and it felt safe enough since the bus never goes very fast, but I was still a bit nervous. I'd be way too nervous to take her on a bus that went on the highway without a seat or seat belt.

Planning a trip to NY by bus with a 3 month old and a 2.5 yr old. Do we buy a seat for the 2.5 yr old and no carseat needed for her? what about the 3 month, carseat? or just ergo him?
