@Dagny: I agree with leaving LO at home. I'm sure your supply will not be impacted too much by pumping for 3 days by the time you hit 12 mos!

Thanks so much for your input everyone! After MUCH agonizing, I've decided to leave LO at home with DH and family. After really thinking through the days (even with the option of taking an extra day), I realized that it would be way too much for LO. I'm definitely concerned about my supply and pumping, but I would hope that after 12 months of breastfeeding my supply would be well enough established to make it through 3 days of pumping okay. Thanks again all!

I've always left my daughter at home for trips like these, but I don't have family who are willing to come along and help. I've heard from others that work travel is *really* different if you bring your child along. Then again, if you're still wanting to breastfeed and don't want to risk drying up (could happen even with pumping), then you're probably better off bringing your child with you. I have a friend who has traveled for work while breastfeeding and had her supply tank. Be aware of that possibility...

If it's not a huge deal to bring your mom I could see the appeal. But trust me (I've done bother bring LO and leave LO) it's usually easier to leave her and worry about the stress of pumping and transporting BM versus the stress of packing her up and myself up and traveling with her.

I have this same dilemma in June, but my trip would be 8-9 days, and a separation that long would possibly endanger breastfeeding for us, so I'm going to try to bring LO (and my husband!) along. Even without BFing, I'm just not ready to be away from him at this age!

I think for three days, leave him at home. If it were a full week, I would bring him, but it's a lot of hassle for him to travel that far for such a short time. I know it's gotta be tough though!

I'm BFing too, and I would leave my kid at home. Way too much hassle and stress for such a short trip. We just did a family trip with a 9 month old and the flights were stressful enough even though she can't walk yet and had her own seat. A mobile lap baby would stress me out to no end.

I would leave LO at home. I'm still BFing at 13.5 months but it seems like such a short trip with a lot of changes and I would rather go do my work (even with the annoyance of pumping) and let LO stay at the comforts of home.

Does he take bottles? How often do you pump? It sounds like that's pretty out of your routine so that's what I would worry about, though at a year maybe he will also be having some cows milk?

If you were in the northeast id say do it since the weather here is so crappy, but in SoCal you don't have that problem :)

I would leave him at home. That sounds like a lot of trouble and disruption for him. And being cooped up in a hotel room with your mom all day probably won't be fun either. So I think bringing him with you would be for your benefit and not his.

LO and I were a package unit when we were BFing, so I took him (plus a caregiver) and I recommend it. It wasn't always easy, but it was the right thing for us.

I would have wanted to bring LO when she was that age.

She's 3 now and I still had a very hard time deciding whether to bring LO on my last trip. After the fact, I was happy I did leave her with DH. Again, I think I feel that way because of her age.

I would leave him at home, especially if DH is going to get help from your family. If you bring him with you, you're going to be so distracted thinking about him, and what time you need to get away to nurse, etc. If he's at home, you'll think about him but you'll be able to relax since there's nothing you can do about it!

5 hours is a LONG time to be on a flight (especially if you've never flown with him before), and it was not fun traveling with LO around that time. Flights only got better because i learned from previous trips what (not) to do.

I totally understand why you'd want to bring LO, but for such a short trip i would leave him at home.

I would totally leave him at home. Flying is such a hassle, plus the expense of your mom, and disruption of his sleep and routines. Plus it doesn't sound like he will gain much from it.

In mid-April, I have to go on a business trip to Florida and I cannot decide whether I should bring LO. I need advice! Sorry this is so long.

LO will be 1 year old at the time of the trip and I have yet to leave him for more than 6 hours. I bf and he still eats frequently (I work at home). The conference I have to attend is 2 days (one full day and a half day) and is in Fort Lauderdale (I'm in SoCal). My mom could come with me and LO and we could either fly out the day before the conference or two days before the conference (to have an extra day to do something fun). LO hasn't been on a plane yet and it's a 5 hour nonstop. I have no clue how he will do on the flight but he's an active guy so I imagine it will be a challenge for sure. If we fly out the day before the conference, we'll travel all day and then settle in in the evening. The next day will be a full conference day for me (I'll be able to go up to the room a few times to nurse during breaks). The third day, I'll have a half day and then we would fly back in the evening.

Here are my main dilemmas:
Am I being selfish to tote LO and my mom along when it will would be a short trip and so much travel time? Would it be better to keep him at home with DH and family caring for him while I'm gone? I seriously cannot decide. I REALLY don't want to spend three days away from him, but I'm not sure what would be best for him. The idea of having to pump so much is such a bummer. And I also worry about how all of this would impact his sleep (he's always been a terrible sleeper and it's always a work in progress).

Thanks bees! I so appreciate this place. :-)
