Oh and I think people's perception is that diabetes is a disease you get because you gorge on sugary foods and all you need to do is reduce that (a *bit* of cake is fine, surely) and it will go away. They don't realise that even cooked carrots or a glass of skimmed milk send my blood sugar high!

Panic not peoples! I just scoffed a chicken ceasar salad, two mini sausages, a few carrot sticks with hummus and a full fat Greek yoghurt. Dinner is in 3 hrs (or whenever the sun goes down around that time) so I will be able to eat something but won't actually be hungry! Success!!

@tororojo: Aaw, that sounds horrible. Makes your heart sink when you see the buffet come out, doesn't it? Burgers are always welcome though!

@runsyellowlites: Ugh, how annoying! People act like you're being a martyr or something or being awkward to get attention. They would probably rather you just give formula and eat what they have made - I think @sea_bass: is bang on the money when she says it makes people feel guilty for the sacrifices they didn't make.

@Foodnerd81: Yeah, im making the best of the weekend, even though it is so tiring, everything is "a short walk" away (which feels like a hike with PGP), our hotel room (booked by MIL) is up two flights of stairs with no lift and Im craving a big glass of wine!!!! Im still managing to have a good time and seeing BIL and SIL so happy is really worth it! So much love!!

I'm sorry you are going through this! That's so hard. I can see people pushing food on you at first, but I really would think as soon as you mentioned diabetes people would back off! Even though you can't bring your own food to dinner, I would definitely have snacks in your car and bag-- even if it means scarfing a granola bar in the bathroom, that's better than starving a diabetic pregnant woman! I think if you are fed, you'll at least be able to deal with all the comments a little better.

I hope you are able to enjoy the wedding at least a little-- it sounds like a long weekend for you.

That sucks, people can be really annoying and inconsiderate! But glad you stuck to your guns. I went to a wedding while pregnant and they had a giant cold cut type sandwich buffet, ugh...I was starving and stopped for a burger afterward.

@Cherrybee: UGH that sounded horrible! I really hope that people start to catch on & will leave you be the next few days!

Personally, I got the same kind of stuff after P was born & I had to cut so many things from my diet... I knew that when we had family gatherings I would need to eat beforehand but everyone, especially FIL, would get so offended when I said I couldn't eat whatever it was they had and would offer it over & over even though I had already explained to them why I couldn't have it! It's like "you're really going to take me eating something & hurting your granddaughter just so you don't feel put off for having made it all?!" UGH!

And just on the day to day, I don't drink (one of those that *can't* drink) so anytime we're at a function & I'm asked I politely decline & then get the same thing.. "What?.. " "Come on..." etc. It gets so old really quick!

Considering I still go through this all the time I don't have any advice... just sympathy & hope they can back off & you can enjoy your time there!

@ladyfingers: Now that's really annoying! You might have personal reasons for not drinking like a history of dependance or a liver problem that he has no right to know about. No means no and people really should leave it at that! Ugh!

At least people were just trying to be nice to me, annoying though it was after the tenth person - your colleague sounds like a right tool!!!

OMG! No advice but that sounds sooo annoying. I don't drink, and people are totally confused by that all the time. I was at a work event and everybody was drinking but me, so a rumor was started that I must be pregnant (I wasn't). Then a client was there and he kept trying to pressure me to take a shot, that one won't hurt, or to order a Long Island iced tea instead of a plain iced tea, etc. The same client did the same shit to me at a convention a couple of months later.

People! We are not at a frat party! We are adults! Stop with the peer pressure!

@Cherrybee: I was wondering how observant they might be. That adds another level of difficulty..

I would certainly eat before and contact the hostess to explain yourself, least you come across as very rude. Obviously, none of this is your fault, but as they will have certainly gone to a lot of effort, its probably best you explain before hand as there is large parts of the meal you will not be able to enjoy.

"It's like Passover without the matzo or wine." Hopefully there'll be some brisket (or matzo ball soup broth?) for you to eat. I would definitely eat beforehand just in case. Good luck!

@sea_bass: As always, you speak a lot of sense!!

The bring your own food is out though - this family are very religious (we have already been given very strict instructions about hand washing, when we can and can't speak, what clothes we must wear) and they actually didnt come to the civil ceremony reception last night (the religious wedding is Sunday but isn't legal coz BIL isn't Jewish so they had a civil wedding too) because although the catering was within kosher rules it wasn't by a kosher company or at a kosher venue and they can't eat with cutlery or off plates that have been near non kosher food. I can't imagine they'd appreciate me bringing a packed lunch and putting their forks near it!!!

I will mention the GD though in case they think Im being rude not eating certain things, good suggestion. I might eat beforehand just in case!!!!

@Cherrybee: I also ment to add that I get this a lot too in UK..

It is often more about the other person legitimising *their* own choices and behaviour in *their* pregnancies, than anything to do with you.

For example, people who drank alcohol through their pregnancies tend to push you to have a drink, as it makes them feel better about their own actions. They want you to do the same so it makes them feel like they did nothing wrong. Same with those that drank caffeine, or over indulged in cake.

I am not saying their is anything wrong with any of those things, its just an observation. Your pregnancy will remind them of theirs (or their wives), and you not indulging in anything probably forces them to confront their own (over) indulgences in their own pregnancies.

Try to keep that in mind that its most certainly more to do with them, than you.

@sea_bass: I agree! BYO your own snacks.

I'm so sorry, this must really suck... you should be enjoying the weekend not worrying about food. And yes, I guess people are just trying to be nice and don't really understand about GD. Focus on getting though and this will all soon be a distant memory when you are holding precious bub in your arms! Sorry I can't be more help!

I'm sorry... It sounds terrible.

I think you just have to try and take it in the spirit it was intended. Which was people trying to be nice to a pregnant woman.

Not a great deal is known about the ins and outs of GD unless you actually have had it, and people may have thought you were denying yourself treats because you were worried about weight gain, rather than your legitimate medical condition.

Id try to plan ahead as much as you can. Any wedding reception in the UK is generally carb heavy so packing snacks that you can have is probably your best bet. Not eating between breakfast and 8pm would have been terrible. I have sent myself into ketosis not eating for shorter gaps!

If I were you I would contact your host discretely and say that you would hate to offend them but due to a pregnancy related medical condition you are on a restricted diet and will be bringing some of your own food.

Telling them in advance would be polite and I am sure they would not be offended. The host would have been pregnant at some point, and would certainly be understanding. Its better to tell them than add more speculation as to why you are not eating the challah etc!

Being pregnant people do feel like they can talk more about your choices in relation to everything. Nothing will change that. I suppose its a way for the community to feel connected to the new person. I know this must be a really difficult time for you, but try not to let it get to you. You are doing a fabulous job managing your GD!

Hope tonight goes well.

Ugh! What is it with people trying to force you to eat and drink things??!

Yesterday was the first day of my BIL's 4 day wedding celebrations. They had a small civil wedding ceremony followed by a champagne and cake buffet. Im 31 weeks pregnant and have stubborn gestational diabetes - I can only have a tiny amount of carbs per day (we are talking no bread at all, a max of 5 rasberries with a meal, a max of three new potatoes with each meal). I also need to combine these tiny amounts of carbohydrate with sufficient protein so it doesn't absorb too quickly. Cake, as you can imagine, was definitely out!

All through the reception, people kept approaching me with cake! Absolute strangers, often. Bring the pregnant lady cake! "Have some cake". "No thanks". "But baby needs cake". "Im sorry, I have diabetes..". "But you can have a *little bit* of cake..". "No, no I can't". The choices of drink were champagne (alcohol) or fruit juice (sugar). "Have some champagne, you can have a little bit" "No thanks". "Well have some juice then" "No thanks". I had to ask the staff to bring me some tap water from the kitchen - I felt like such a party pooper!

Then, having not eaten since breakfast, I was so hungry by the time the evening buffet came out at 8pm. Imagine my horror when it was sushi platters, a selection of lovely breads with dips and pastry covered savoury snacks. There were some vegetable sticks and some salad garnish, which I ate, and there were tiny bits of flaked cooked salmon around the raw fish.... But again, cue the comments: "Baby needs food" "Surely you can have bread?" "You could have a *little bit* of pastry...." "Do you want a coffee then?" "No thanks - caffiene". Cue eye roll from other person. Its a party, I don't want to bring up my health conditions, never mind give a full blown explanation but nothing less than that makes them stop!

People!! Stop worrying about me and worry about your own dinner! Agh!

I'm just grumpy because I have three more days of this! I am going to starve at this rate!! Tonight is a traditional Jewish sabbath dinner at new SIL's parents house - its gonna be low carb right?? Right?? I don't want to offend them by refusing to eat. Plus Im not a party pooper at all, I love eating and drinking and trying new things - but I can't risk messing this up because its my baby at risk - plus if I don't control my blood sugar they will make me inject myself with insulin and I am really scared of that.....

Rant over!!

Seriously though, how annoying is it when people get in your face about your food choices? Paleo people - how do you cope???
