@Beehive: I understand - I'm still trying to deprogram from a lifestyle of low fat messages. I still feel oddly guilty when I go out of my way to include fat in a meal, but my body sure knows how much it wants.

We use butter, Olive oil, and grapeseed oil to cook most of our food. I love butter! :) our ped also recommended putting butter into LO's food when she was having trouble gaining weight

Butter! It's a good fat and babies/toddlers need a lot more fats than adults! I purposefully use extra fats in J's food.

@sarac: Thanks! For some reason I have always thought of butter as "bad" fat since it's saturated fat (as opposed to the fat in olive oil, avocado oil, etc).

Fat is really crucial for brain development, especially before age 2. A healthy amount of good fats is CRUCIAL for their long term health! Go for it.

Organic butter is supposed to be even better for you than olive oil, especially when cooking. I wouldn't worry about any if them at this point though.

When we were having trouble with him gaining weight at around a year, our pediatrician recommended using it as often as we could until he got back on track.

He likes it and it helps him eat his veggies, so until weight in the other direction becomes a concern we are going to keep using it. I'd prefer he had butter from a good source rather than margarine.

@Beehive: we use butter for some things and avocado oil for others. the fat is definitely good (for everyone, IMO) especially for babies.

Just wondering what you guys thought about cooking your LO's food in butter. DH and I cook nearly all our food in olive oil, but when our nanny prepares LO's meals (he's 15 months), she often uses butter. Is that okay at this age? Should I ask her to use olive oil instead, or is the fat good at this point?
