@MenagerieMama: I agree with the above about spending too much time searching for marginally better deals. Maybe split the difference and get the washer/dryer now and wait on the oven/other stuff?

1. Did you get the 10% off mover's coupon from USPS to Lowes/Home depot? Make sure you register your new address and they send you coupons.

2. Do you have a citi credit card? One of their benefits is price rewind. they basically track your purchase over 45 days and if it drops, they give you that money back. they make it ridiculously easy and i've gotten back over $500 in the past year. This way, you can purchase now and get the price diference later. https://www.citipricerewind.com/

Labor Day is so soon that I would wait since it sounds like nothing is broken For appliances, I definitely think waiting until a holiday or the end of the year is worth it since prices are typically slashed. I don’t have any great savings stories since we’ve only had to replace needed appliances when they broke (2 washers at the same time 😭 and an oven). However, for something like a washer (which is usually more tucked away) if you want it right away places like Lowe’s and Home Depot often have scratch and dent inventory that’s cheaper—you just have to ask.

We are buying a 50s house next month and getting all new appliances. But I’m waiting for the Home Depot November sale. To me it’s worth the wait.

@Hypatia: That is a super good point - I definitely over analyze and research so that's a major problem for me!

I did the impulsive thing and immediately bought a w/d. Granted, the house didn't come with a set, and I wasn't about to drive to a laundry mat (that was bad enough when it was just me in college; the idea of doing laundry for four people there makes me shudder). So I'm probably not the best person to chime in.

But just in case you do decide not to wait, I think it's important to accept that you aren't always going to get the best deal. Sometimes I think that in today's age, we spend way too much time thinking about / researching / waiting / hurrying after the next sale so that we can tell ourselves that we did our best to be frugal. But at some point, you aren't really being that frugal because you're losing that most precious thing of all: time. In five years, I'm not going to remember that I bought our w/d at full price. But I know that I would definitely remember that we had to do without a w/d for x amount of months, and hopefully I could laugh about it by then, but at the end of the day, enjoying our home NOW is more important to me than not enjoying it for the sake of a What If Something Better Comes Along.

So we just moved into a new house and it needs a lot of updating (1984 build) but nothing critical. One thing near the top of our list though is updating appliances, both for reliability and energy efficiency because I know the oven and suspect w/d are original, and the fridge is pretty dang old too. We cloth diaper so for w/d I almost feel like the upgrade pays for itself with energy/water in a couple years. Plus the existing w/d are tiny, like I'll be doing laundry 3x as frequently as I do now.

The problem is we missed the July 4th sales, and the w/d set I want (we're limited because it's a small laundry room) is only 15% off at best. Do I live with what we've got for a while? Wait for labor day sales? One part of me says wait, the other says at least get the new w/d now because this tiny old one is going to drive me batty.

Mostly the financially smart choice is to wait for a better sale, so tell me about all the amazing Labor Day buys you've made to convince me! Haha :silly:
