We use the skycaps so we can check everything at the curb. Then when you get to your destination, pick them up with rest of your luggage. Unless they are picking you up and you trust them to install the seats. Then I'd say buy and just leave them there for any future visits. You can get a perfectly acceptable carseat for under $100. Assuming the 3 yo is forward facing, I'd get a Harness to Booster seat (Graco Nautilus is affordable) so it can be used for a long time.
