@wheres_c: Right there with ya on feeling like a failure. I was planning on natural, unmedicated birth and ended up with csection. I plan on a VBAC with #2 (not yet pregnant). My csection recovery was HORRIBLE and long, so I'm hoping to not have to go that route again.
This is a great thread!

@MamaBehr: I don't really need to decide right away, but it is something that my OB and midwife starting talking about. I think DH would like to be more on the same page, but the one NP said even if I would decide to have a c-section and end up going into labor earlier I could change my mind. I just want to know a little more of the facts so we can feel more at peace about it.

@Ginger333: surprisingly, my c-section didn't suck which is why DH would be fine with having another one. But, having a toddler and recovering would be a whole different ball game. I am glad to hear about your VBAC successes... I always wanted a natural birth with DS so that makes me sad I didn't have that. I would love to hear more about your VBACs!

I had an emergency C-section with my first, it sucked.
I have had two amazing unmedicated VBACs since then! It was an easy decision for me - I have just always pictured myself having a natural birth. I'd love a chance for a home birth one day ...
I'm happy to talk about it with you if you want :)

@creativemomma15 I'm just curious, when do you have to decide this? Can you go into the third trimester (or even December) thinking that you are going for a VBAC and then change your mind, or do you need to know sooner?

I am not pregnant with #2 yet but I have my heart set on trying for a VBAC. I've already started researching providers so that I can see them before TTC.
I've researched the risks for both options and want to give a vaginal birth a shot. I feel like a failure from my first delivery.

@creativemomma15: I don't have any great reasons! :-) My kids are 16 months apart...my OB said he would support me if I wanted to try a VBAC but he normally recommends 2 years. I was a little bummed that I ended up with a C-section with my first but I got over it quickly and I didn't feel a need to experience a vaginal birth.

My recovery was ok. My body is kind of resistant to pain meds so the first two weeks were bad but DH was around for 5 weeks.

@creativemomma15: the doctors gently encouraged me to get a vbac but i could have gotten a c-section when i was admitted. since she was small, i gave it a try and i'm glad i did! though the recovery was actually harder for me with a vbac than a c-section, but that largely had to do with fact that olive had to stay 5 extra days and i had to walk so much since I was discharged!

@creativemomma15: I had a c section and will have a scheduled c section if we have another. I don't do well with pain and I loved how easy the recovery was with my c section. I didn't go into labor, didn't have contractions, it was really easy and fairly painless for childbirth!

@creativemomma15: Okay.... I have a few minutes to spare.....

First, finding a truly supportive provider is key! Many many many providers say they're supportive of vbac & then pull a switch requiring things that would make it practically impossible to have a successful vbac. Know they're success rate & their regular induction & cesarean rates (a HCP that doesn't allow their ftm go past 41 weeks probably isn't all that supportive of vbac)
http://www.bellybelly.com.au/birth/vbac-sabotage-is-your-doctor-really-vbac-friendly#.Udzpo2S9Kc0

For research I really liked:
http://www.vbac.com/
http://vbacfacts.com/quick-facts/
http://childbirthconnection.org/article.asp?ClickedLink=293&ck=10212&area=27

And a fantastic study released by the NIH - It's easy to read & really puts it all there. There was a 3 fold maternal mortality for moms that chose an erc (even compared to those that had a failed vbac that ended in cesarean anyways), but there was a 2.5 fold increase in perinatal death in those that chose vbac (it doesn't distinguish between those that were successful to those that ended in emergency cesarean though) and there was suggestion that it could also be due to higher risk of stillbirth with vbac over erc (since erc are planned earlier).
http://consensus.nih.gov/2010/images/vbac/vbac_statement.pdf

Ultimately for us, the risks associated with cesarean in general outweighed the risk of vbac AND since we knew we wanted more children the long term risk to me especially & any future pregnancies was something we really wanted to avoid.

@MamaBehr: I had to find an out of hospital midwife to have my vbac b/c no hospital within 100 miles allows vbac. My current MW has had vbac, vba2c, and a vba4c mom. And the recommendation from acog is still that many moms with 2 previous cesareans meet vbac candidacy & should be counseled for vbac. Getting with your local ICAN chapter may help find a provider too! Just don't discount your opportunity without knowing all the facts & possible options (some hospitals are starting to change their policies as well to reduce the unnecessary cesarean rates so maybe when you're ready you'll have more options). ;)

@MamaBehr: Thanks for your story! I am anxious to really talk to the OB that I like more and hear his opinion and get more of the facts from him and the one midwife I like. Hopefully we will have a better feel for it after our next appointment. I will say, if we do a VBAC I am kind of nervous about all the healing and trauma down there with pushing and tearing! I healed really quickly with my c-section so that's why DH is quicker to lean towards that. Oh, and I am also nervous I will go into labor early too! I was 4 weeks early with DS and my water broke and I was fully dilated within 4 1/2 hours! Who knows what it could look like this time!

@creativemomma15 I keep meaning to respond to you on the Jan 2014 board, but my OB/GYN and midwife only gave me terrible information about VBACs as well. That this and that can go wrong and results in DEATH and blah blah blah. The only reason why I didn't go for a VBAC was because no OB/GYNs where I am do them and the closest hospital that does it is about an hour to an hour and a half away. We ultimately decided to do c-section because we don't have family around and wanted to plan for my mom to be here when the baby was born, so someone could be with DD. (of course my water broke two weeks before my scheduled date and we had to find a babysitter for the night anyways!)

I have heard wonderful things about VBACs, and sure things can go wrong, but things can go wrong with a c-section too! I have heard that the recovery from a VBAC is so much better and if I could do it, I would! It really bothers me that I will never get to experience that kind of birth. That I don't get to talk about pushing and feeling the baby come out, having the baby laid on my chest, doing skin to skin contact right away.

I hope this is somewhat coherent. :)

My practice is one of the only ones that allows VBACs anymore and I really like the midwives and 1 OB. The other OB we met with is just very cut & dry, the facts, and not personable.

I will add... DH is quicker to say to have another c-section whereas I am quicker to try for a VBAC. I think our OB just kind of freaked us out by mentioned fetal death in failed VBACs.

I found a provider experienced in vbac & had a successful vbac with P..... I actually planned an hbac b/c the hospitals where I live have de facto bans in place & after lots of research the risks associated with hbac were still lower than an erc.

I am pregnant with my 2nd and had an emergency c-section with my DS at 36 weeks because he was breech and I was fully dilated shortly after we were admitted. We are still in talks with our OB & midwife about what to do with this pregnancy (repeat c-section vs VBAC) and are undecided. We were told we are a great candidate for a VBAC because my c-section was purely because of DS being breech. I am not sure what we will do as we felt like the OB gave us all the negatives of a VBAC and moved on.

Now I am wondering... What was your next delivery after a c-section like? How did you decide what to do?
