I just had a c section with my third and my middle child is 30 pounds. I would say I felt well enough to pick him up for very short periods between week 2 and 3. During week 3 I was able to comfortably hold him for longer periods. They told me in the hospital if I had to pick him up not to bend over at my waist to pick him up and I should bend at the knees to pick him up if that makes sense. I had a very easy recovery and my husband was home with me for 1.5 weeks and I sent my kids to daycare so that helped. Hopefully you will have an easy recovery too and hopefully the 2 weeks your mom will be there will help.

@babynumber1: he hasn't climbed out (in a sleep sack) but I think I could get a little stool and throw it in there and spot him out. I'm planning on zero lifting for at least 2 weeks, hopefully longer.

Thanks for the responses everyone!

@Mrs. Champagne: There is no way you should be lifting a 2 year old out of a crib after a c section. My children are 3 1/2 years apart so I was able to not lift her for a few months after my RCS. I recovered quicker the 2nd time because I slept 1/2 sitting up on the couch (luckily ours recline) and didn't pick up the baby in the infant bucket.

Can he climb out and you be his spotter?

The first week was tough. I had a three year old and a 12 month old. The middle was still in a crib and was still very much a baby. I was picking her up by the end of the second week. My husband worked from home so he wasn't completely available to me but could help in a pinch.

Teaching them to climb up to be close to me really helped. Nap time was hard because of the crib issue but that was short lived.

My three year old just kind of understood and wasn't used to me lifting her a ton so that was a nonissue.

Overall my recovery was pretty easy but I was sad not being able to lift my little ones. Technically I wasn't supposed to even lift the baby.

I tried to avoid lifting my 3.5 yo as much as possible for the first two weeks. Towards the end of that I had to take her to school, which meant lifting her up in the car (SUV), but it was doable.

The hardest movement for me was BY FAR trying to sit up from laying down. The lifting didn't bother me so much.

I didn't lift DS (2.5 and probably 40lbs when DD was born) for 2 weeks, but at my 2 week follow up, the OB said it would be fine to lift him as needed as long as it felt okay. Not carry around, but lift up and down (into and out of crib, etc.) when necessary. I never had any problems.

ETA: We got a small stepstool for him to climb into the car. He loved it and it worked great!

@erinbaderin: I think I can manage two weeks with no lifting! My mom is going to come Monday-Friday the first couple weeks. Maybe week three I'll try just a few days. We've been working on climbing stairs, getting out of the car (he can't climb in yet). I'll try the crib.

My husband should be home for getting ds up and home for bedtime so it would just be nap time i need to deal with the crib on my own.

@Madison43: good idea for the chair. I should try teaching him that soon! I've got 4.5 weeks to go.

I had a repeat csection when LO1 was 2 and still in her crib. As long as I had my abdomen wrapped I didn't have any issue carrying her for short periods of time after the first week. Picking her up from ground level was the most difficult, so I would have her climb onto the couch and I would lift her from there. For getting her in and out of the crib, I had my husband put a dining room chair next to her crib and then she would climb onto that and I'd lift her into the crib and vice versa in the way out. It wasn't terrible at all.

I did zero lifting for about two weeks (for reference, I had a repeat c, needed a blood transfusion, and had a 27 month). My husband stayed home for three weeks. B was in daycare, so we taught him to climb into the car by himself. For cribs, I had him climb onto a chair and then sit on the edge of the crib, and then helped support him as he slid down. After about two weeks I just started lifting him in and out. I wasn't picking him up to carry him around or anything, I stopped carrying him down the stairs, but the crib and occasionally the car seat was ok. I think if your mom is staying for two weeks, as long as you have a pretty standard recovery, you should be ok.

@ShootingStar: thanks for responding. Definitely not switching his crib. He's crazy and we are putting it off! I would lose naps for sure I think. So would you say 0 lifting him for 6 weeks? Just trying to figure out my mom staying and helping!

Can you get a mothers helper at all for a few weeks? And maybe have DH get the toddler up in the morning? You really don't want to be lifting a 30 pound toddler after major abdominal surgery. If your crib converts I'd also do that now and get him used to it.

How was your recovery of you had a toddler at home? My son will be just over 2 when I have a c section (first one, not a repeat)

My friend just had a c section and had a really good recovery. But she literally didn't lift her two year old until after 6 weeks. She sent her to full time day care. I don't have that option (stay at home mom).

So, how was recovering with a toddler? How long did you actually wait to lift them? He is still on a crib so needs help in and out.

Any tips/advice welcome :)

Oh and DH will not have any time off except weekends. My mom plans to come for 2 weeks and longer if needed, but I get the feeling she would rather not stay much longer.
