So it turns out I had some false information (or maybe wishful thinking?)! In fact, it is six *weeks* additional bonding time, not six months! It certainly makes it a much easier choice -- I think I'll plan on taking it.

I would definitely take the 6 months or do a little less and ask to use up the rest of your maternity to go part time at first. My work gave me 24 weeks. 12 FMLA and 12 CFRA. I think technically FMLA and PFL can run concurrently once your disability ends, but they gave me the 24 weeks. However, I did feel pressure to come back sooner. They would have liked to see me back after 12 weeks but I decided to take 16 weeks off, then I'm using the rest of my leave to work part time for 16 weeks. Now that I have to go back next week, I wish I could take 4 more weeks off! I think it's really nice that California offers an additional 12 weeks of family leave.

I live in California and took mat leave last year and unless this is a new thing I only got 6 weeks paid family leave (bonding time) and 6 weeks STD. The 12 weeks FMLA runs concurrently with those. I was able to take an additional 4 weeks unpaid and my company held my job for me.

Wow - I would totally take that if I knew that I would keep my job. I don't know if I would take the full 6 months, but 12 weeks is just not enough, so I would do something between the 12 weeks and 6 months. Oh, that sounds like a dream!

Where did you see this? I've just never heard of it, and my understanding is that your company legally only has to retain your job for you for 12 weeks (I think this is on top the disability portion/recovery time for delivery) so about 4 months after baby's birth. I definitely could be wrong though. If it IS 6 months with job security than I'd say go for it! (I would if I could afford it) but it all depends on your company's maternity leave, because I do know that the CA FMLA only pays the 55% for like 6 weeks (after the disability portion ends).

Wow my state only offers 6 weeks in bonding time. If my state offered 6months I would take it and not care what the employer thinks since he isnt paying for it. Can't they hire a temp to cover for that time

I've recently learned about California's (and maybe there are other states I don't know about) allowance for a total of 6 months of "bonding time" with baby. I plan on going back to work (don't have an option to be a single-income family) and my company offers 3 months maternity leave and the thought of leaving a thee month-old with a nanny keeps me up at night.

My question is, do you think opting for the additional 3 months via the state would tarnish a good reputation at work? I work as a field executive for a cosmetics company, not an office situation, and I'm worried my employer will frown on itsince there aren't many people to help pick up the slack for that long. However, I'm going to do what's best for our family...I'm just nervous.
