I'm coming back to this post because we think we made a decision. While the boxes are in good shape, the paint job these people did, as well as the terrible job they did with the trim around it, makes us want to replace. So....we got a MUCH lower quote ($2k less) with another company and we are replacing! Replacing as-is other than the island, which we will be putting drawers into, instead of cabinet doors. We are also doing granite on top. I cannot wait! :)

@Bernieboo: we did the same and are very happy! Honesty by the time we sanded the painting wasn't hard. Just long. It was a great week night project. One cost per night.

We just bought our first home and painted the cabinets in the kitchen (the kitchen was super dark bc of the colors they picked, but we didn't want to remodel it). It turned out really nice, but it was a lot of work. We were working from the basic oak strain and had to clean really well, sand, prime twice, and paint. I'll try to post a before and after picture (excuse our construction mess). We talked extensively with the guy at Sherwin Williams and he was so helpful! Made sure we got the right paint and did everything correctly so that they'll stay nice for years.

I would have the people who can reface them give their honest opinion about exactly what they will do & whether the frames/boxes will look ok. As far as I know, refacing only replaces doors on otherwise good frames/boxes. Depending on how much time & effort you have to put in, you may not end up with your full cost savings, or it could just end up being a very lengthy, frustrating process. DH & I have embarked on several of these kinds of projects that I later regretted due to the amount of work & effort, but we are also kind of meticulous, lol.

We refaced ours, and I love it. Our kitchen was hideous but with the refaced cabinets, a new counter and a backsplash now I think it's beautiful.

@mediagirl: You could probably repaint them and do a better job for a lot less than $5500. I did mine with SW cabinet paint and they are holding up (the frames, I'm working on the doors). I've also heard good things about BM Advance paint.

I'd reface then. I am sure it's going to look great!

Also, if you are going to sand them down, what about just staining them? That would also be an option...maybe do one as a test?

@T.H.O.U.: they painted everything. We are thinking of doing some of the work ourselves and stripping the paint and sanding down the cabinets before having someone come in and do the work to reface. The stripping and sanding seems like it will be the most amount of work.

I was just gonna say what @looch: said. As long as you don't want to change the layout of the kitchen, I would just reface. We refaced ours a couple years ago now, and you absolutely can't tell they're not all new cabinets.

We have to do something in our kitchen. One of the previous owners thought painting maple cabinets with standard house paint would be a good idea. It was a poor choice. We have the choice of refacing the cabinets and replacing the doors or redoing the cabinets all together.

Refacing will be about $5500. Replacing will be $9500. I'd prefer to reface for cost sake but I'd like to get some opinions. What have you done? Would you do it again?

Money does matter in this case. There's a lot we could do with that $4000....
