With my youngest (now 9.5 months) I think it affects him. I noticed that when I drink anything with caffeine in the morning his afternoon nap will be short or he won't nap at all. Since cutting caffeine out in the mornings he naps better now. I drink a cup of green or black tea in the afternoon just to help with energy sometimes but not every day. Haven't seen any effects with those drinks though. Weird.

i was having 2 cups a day until recently. now i have one. i also have the occasional diet coke. and when i have only cup of coffee (sometimes i still have 2), i have a cup or 2 of green tea instead of the second coffee.......AND my LO sleeps 9 hours a night for over a week now (he is 9.5 weeks old).....so my guess is that caffeine does not affect his sleep!

@Bao: My guess is the best way to tell how much it affects your LO is to try a day or two without it and see if it makes a difference and improves their sleep

I drink one or two cups every morning. Doesn't seem to affect my LO. I just drank a cup, nursed him and he passed out.

I definitely limited my caffeine while breastfeeding b/c my DS had lots of sleep issues. Anything I could do to help him sleep better, I was on it!

We have sleep issues too. Since going back to work, I generally have a small cup of tea in the morning and nothing at night. It's enough to get me through the day. On the weekends, I'll drink a Coke Zero in the morning. I miss lattes in general because cow's milk does us in with gas.

According to Kellymom, some babies are more sensitive than others. http://kellymom.com/bf/can-i-breastfeed/lifestyle/caffeine/

I always tried to limit my caffeine intake while breastfeeding just like I did when pregnant.

I think it's different for everyone. I avoided caffeine until my kids were about 4 months old because I was terrified I'd make their sleep worse. But then the new mom adrenaline was totally worn off and I started drinking a chai tea latte every morning and nothing has changed with them. But I've known others that say it really helped their kids to avoid caffeine....you might just have to try w/o for a few days to ease your concern.

I have heard that caffeine does not affect breast milk, but I'm wondering others thoughts on this. I drink a very strong cup of coffee a day and usually a pop in the afternoon. LO has so many sleep issues, and although probably not related to caffeine, it's still in the back of my mind. Does anyone know how much really affects your milk?
