@Mrs. Sketchbook: Hmmm....if making cake for 60, I'd probably plan on 3 sheet cakes. To divide them into layers, just use a bread knife to separate. You can find box mix on sale at Safeway for $1 a box, so that would cost $3. Fill with any type of jam, $1/jar at the Dollar Store, and then frost with any frosting, probably on sale for about $2.50 a can. That would cost about $13.50.

Hope this helps!

@Mrs. Sketchbook: The Costco full sheets are $17.99 I think-- only a couple of bucks over your budget if you're able to swing it! $3 would be worth saving my sanity and time!

ETA: Oh shoot, I thought you meant $15/cake.

Wow. That is an impressive budget. I'm not sure I could make one smaller cake for that much! But I have expensive food tastes, maybe?? I like the idea of a sheet cake, but when you say filled are you planning to layer them? If so, I think it would be hard to move the sections if you are going to slice in half and then fill. I'd do four "cakes" and have thicker layers so they are easier to move. I could be reading you all wrong, though.

Hi everyone! I'm thinking two filled 13 x 9 sheet cakes. Fortunately I can make the cakes ahead of time and freeze. Then I can make the icing two or three days ahead of time. Right now my budget for cake is fifteen dollars max! So unless I can get it for fifteen, I don't think buying will be possible! I'd prefer not to make it, but budget dictates! I will look into SAMs since we have a membership, but they don't have prices online. I did look into publix, and their full sheet is eighty dollars!! So definitely not happening!

Cake baking doesn't usually intimidate me, given time to do it!

Another vote here for Costco cake... Cake for 60 sounds like a daunting task and more trouble than its worth. And I don't know about you, but the though of decorating that much cake would send me running away screaming (I am the WORST at decorating cakes!).
If you're going to do sheet cakes, I think you need to do at least a double layer- otherwise it's kind of, well, not very nice for your guests (who wants a thin little piece of cake?) and I'm of the idea that if it isn't going to look nice then I would rather buy it. :)

Um...cake for 60. Have you considered buying cake from Sam's Club or Costco? A sheet cake feeds 50 and is about $15.

Cake for 60, homemade, is a LOT of cake!

But...if i were doing it..I'd either do cupcakes or 4 big cakes, all different flavors. I'd do a single layer.

Doing the math, if you make a 13x9 cake and expect it to feed 30 people, each person would get a 1.97 inch square. Which is a fairly small piece of cake. I would either make 3 one layer cakes, or 2 two layer cakes... depending on your cake skills and the amount of effort you want to put in.

I'd do sheet cake, not filled, just iced. Will be a lot easier to cut and serve. I'd do a smash cake for LO, round, filled and iced for photos!

Making scribbles bday cake. How would you make cake for sixty?

I'm thinking: two 13 * 9 cakes.

The question is, do I make those two layers or one layer?

If only one, do I cut it into two and fill?
