@Mrs.Someone: haha yes, both my girls are foodaholics. Like you can't eat without them grabbing your food. Dd1 face planted into her cake which was hilarious. dD2 immediately went for it but she didn't get IN to it like big sister. She just kept grabbing frosting off it. But when I was holding her later to put it away she went to grab for it again. LOL

@BandDmommy: the only way we got my kid to eat her cake was decorate it with blueberries, her favorite thing at the time. She was just picking the healthy blueberries off the frosting while I tried to force her to eat cake. :silly:

@Freckles: haha I didn't actually give chocolate. It was made out of black beans and tasted like chocolate. I didn't do a pro shoot, just pictures during her party. I didn't think the chocolate was a big dea.

@regberadaisy: oops sorry, I saw that you used chocolate! I knew a girl who used choc icing and her son was slipping and sliding all over it, and it was at a professional shoot.

Just not chocolate, or blue icing. No offense to anyone who had used chocolate but it doesn't look very nice in (professional) pictures.

DD1 face planted into her smash cake; it was epically hilarious. Can't wait to see what DD2 does tomorrow. 😂

We bought our smash cake and it was a vanilla cake with buttercream frosting. IT WAS DIVINE. But LO wanted absolutely nothing to do with it. Wouldn't even touch the frosting. I think your kid is probably going to like it or not and softness of the cake won't make a huge difference.

I don't think it makes a difference to be honest. For me it was more about what kind of cake I wanted my one year old to eat. I was less concerned about how it would look in pictures! For DD1 I baked a black bean "chocolate" cake - it tasted better than it sounds! For DD2 I'm baking Sarah Crowder's healthy smash cake which is essentially a banana cake with no added refined sugars. She uses maple syrup as a sweetener and I have all natural at home.

I am going to be doing a DIY cake smash for my daughter at home, including making the cake myself.

I was just going to make the vanilla/yellow cake I always make, but I read somewhere that sponge cake is a better choice for a cake smash because it's easier for the birthday kid to rip into.

Those who have done a cake smash, what kind of cake did you use?
