@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: glad you know...sorry he has an ear infection! :(

I'm no oil expert by any means but I know many people do not recommend peppermint under 1 year. I am currently using 2 drops of lemon and 2 drops of arborvitae in a 10ml roller bottle on DD who is 6 mos. Vicks baby would be great too!! Don't sign up under her until you know how you like it- and honestly I'd read around and see if you feel comfortable with the advice she gave (ie peppermint) before you do that! Coopsmama here has lots if insights on oils too!!!

@pwnstar: Thank you! The doctor warned us that he may develop a fever over the weekend since the amoxicillin doesn't kick in right away. So far so good.

@Mrs D: One of his daycare teachers suggested essential oils to clear up his congestion- maybe lemon or peppermint. Which ones do you use and where do you buy? She offered to put me into some kind of buying group, but I want to get the oils this weekend.

Before leaving for work today I checked his temp and he was fine and I was calm because the last response I read was to look out for a fever. However, I'm going to pick him up and take him to the doctor.

ETA: he has one definite ear infection and doc said the other one was on it's way.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: my older LO gets hardly any fever with ear infections- like half the time it will go up to 101, maybe, but other times no fever and she can have a terrible one. But, they don't even treat every ear infection right away, now they like to wait and see if it will clear up on to own anyway. So I wouldn't worry TOO much about waiting to take him in. But if you are worried, it's also nice to know for peace of mind so no harm in a quick visit. My 3 year old had 5 ear infections in the first half of this year and the primary symptom is her personality totally changes and she throws tantrums that are insane. But I ask if her ears hurt and she says no.

So if it's just a cold and runny nose I would keep doing saline spray, and nose Frida when he will tolerate it. If it's keeping him up at night is be more inclined to bring him in.

Eta: my comment about not treating every ear infection is more for older kids- I expect (but don't know for sure) that they treat little babies more quickly.

DD was very contested for about the first 5 months of her life. But in the NICU and at dr appt, they couldn't hear anything in her chest so they weren't concerned. They said it was just nasal congestion and we should use saline and nose Frida if needed.

She was born with a flat face (she was right up against my pubic bone for most of the pregnancy) and then the cpap in the NICU for the first two days didn't help. Dr's said her face would become more normal and it has. I think that is why she was congested early on.

@pwnstar: I apologize...I guess I just dont associate congestion with a guaranteed risk of ear infection without another tell tale sign (pulling on ears, other drainage, fever, etc). I should not have implied a blanket statement that all kids get fevers with them - I should have clarified that mine always did before they got bad. I was just trying to calm a concerned Mom who I didnt want to be worried about hearing loss...coming from a parent who went through many many ear infects and tubes...

Agree that ear infections often present without fever. My daughter has had so many ear infections we're on round 2 of tubes and she has literally never had a fever with them. Meanwhile my son spiked a 103 with his ear infection last month. For both my kids, the telltale sign is eye drainage.

I agree that you don't need to get worked up over hearing loss, that will take time to become an issue, but if you are concerned it's an ear infection, it doesn't hurt to take him for nothing other than your peace of mind.

@Mrs D: An untreated ear infection can lead to complications like a burst ear drum. And not all ear infections present with fever. It's not panicking to be aware of a potential issue (ear infection) and to want to rule it out.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Dont panic over ear infections and hearing loss...

LO will spike a fever if it gets back - thats always how we knew about DDs. Plus - it only temporarily affects their hearing...once the fluid is gone they are good!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: With ear infections, my son would typically get them following a cold (the ear canal can't drain because it hasn't developed the bend in it yet). The clue would be a fever.

Are you taking him in today?

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: our ped always says if it's been more then 10 days bring them in. My boys get ear infections and they only have cold symptoms. Then out of no where they get a fever in the 102-103 range (always at night).

Remind me if he's in daycare? If he is I would get his ears checked. Obviously kids not in daycare can get ear infections too but LO had 6 in one year of part-time daycare, none for a year home with me, and she just started preschool again and already has a double ear infection again. They can be pretty sneaky too - she has had them with very few symptoms and no fever.

DD is 5 mos, she has been congested for about 2 weeks...I'm just using saline, nose freida, some oils on her feet and snuggles!

She coughs a little. But its a good productive cough.

If she has no fever and no concerning sounding cough unfortunately you'll just have to wait it out...

We have been using the saline spray and nosefrida, but now it's harder to ckear him up because he fights the intrusion. This morning I let him sleep in a steamy bathroom for about 7-10 minutes, which helped some this morning.

LO is coming up on almost 2 weeks of nasal congestion. At first the snot was clear, but the last couple of days it's pale yellow thicker mucus. The only other thing going on with him is more frequent pooping- all during the day though.

I Googled baby congestion when it first happened, but Dr. Google says its harmless. I pushed back his 4 mos vax appointment next Monday hoping when we go the following he will be nice and healthy. Also, I am pretty sure LO passed along whatever he had to me except I had a sore throat for a day, and I still have nasal congestion. LO could have had a sore throat too, but he's too little to tell me.

I'm hesitant to call the Ped or my insurance nurses because the times I have taken their recommendation to make an appointment my concerns were unfounded. Starting with HB first this time!
