I have called 911 from my cell phones several times and never had a problem with being transferred. I was put on hold once for a few minutes, but thats it.

I called from my cell phone and was connected correctly right away. There was a fight at a park and I called as I was walking away and heard the sirens there within a mi the (we were a couple blocks from the police station).

In my new town I wonder... I have crappy cell service as it is.

It wasn't a cell phone issue but I have had to wait on hold when calling 911.

@wheres_c: it's not available in our area, unfortunately. Definitely something people should look into.

@Bao: @Mae: The officer said it definitely depends on the area and which cell tower you connect to first.

Do you have smart 911 in your neighbourhood?
If so, opting in helps them route a call in an emergency.

https://www.smart911.com/

I've had this issue before in other areas when calling 911. Other areas I've had no problems.

Oh my gosh that is crazy! Unfortunately we've had to call 911 twice for my daughter, used a cell phone but no issues. First responders were here in a minute and a half. Ambulance was a different story.

I hope the person you were helping is ok! Sheesh!

Whoa that's terrible! I've never called 911 before, but that's super inefficient. I hope your neighbor will be okay!

Have you had to call 911, in an emergency, from a cell phone?

I had to call tonight for a resident in my building who I found collapsed. I was a little caught off guard by the fact that I was transferred TWICE before being connected to my local dispatch. I was initially connected to a dispatch about 30 minutes away who said they couldn't directly connect me to my local one. They sent it to the state dispatch who then connected to my local dispatch. I was on the phone for almost 5 minutes before speaking to my local dispatcher - that's a long time in an emergency!

Once the paramedics arrived and were working I asked the police officer about it and he recommended calling the police department directly if calling from a cell phone. I always call them directly for non emergencies but assumed 911 would be better in an emergency... I'm sure this is dependent on your area but it seemed so bizarre to me.

I've added the police numbers for the towns I spend the most time in to my phone now just in case.
