I'm an Atlanta native, and I also work in Midtown. I echo the suggestions of Marietta and downtown Decatur. I live in the city, not too far from Decatur now. Before I met my husband, I lived in Cobb county for many years and loved it there. I'm familiar with lots of areas of the city, having lived here for nearly 40 years. :) Let me know if you have any questions!

Welcome to Georgia! South of Atlanta a good area miggt be Peachtree City. Only area South with really good schools and is a nice area. Lots of outdoor trails, golf communities, and farmers markets. Your commute to midtown would be about 40-45 minutes. No Marta available.

Closer to Atlanta, definitely check out Decatur and Marietta. Great schools and great downtown areas to enjoy. And Decatur can offer public transportation too. Another area that is growing and has good schools is the Smyrna area, and it's a little further out.

We moved to Atlanta from Chicago almost a year ago and have the identical situation - I work from home and DH works in Midtown. We initially rented a place in Midtown initially which was super convenient, but we are moving to Decatur (City of Decatur specifically - it makes a huge difference in terms of schools) in a few weeks. It is a fantastic community, the schools are awesome, and the commute to Midtown is about 30 minutes with traffic.

We very rarely venture outside the perimeter and we don't know many people who live there. Some of DH's colleagues live in Dunwoody and seem to like it.

Not from Georgia but just got back from visiting a friend there! She lives in Fayetteville which is about 20 min outside of Atlanta. I have no idea how the commute would be but her area seems pretty nice!

Hey there! I've lived in various parts of the city/suburbs since 2008. If you want suburbs/good schools, both Cobb (Marietta, mainly) and north Fulton (Roswell, Alpharetta, Johns Creek) seem to have the best schools. I live in north Fulton and commute into the city in under 40 min, but I'm not all the way in Midtown so you'd have to check that. I have flexibility in start/end times for my job so I tend to commute earlier to avoid traffic. MARTA (train/subway) may be a good option for your DH depending on whether his job is close enough to a station.

If you want more in-town but still good schools, Decatur would be a good choice. It's great for families and quality of life, but housing is extremely expensive.

DH just got a job offer in Atlanta and we are considering moving our family from Oregon to Georgia. His company is located in Midtown and I work from home (so commuting is not an issue for me). Any suggestions on areas to live? We prefer to live in the suburbs and want to have access to good public schools. We are aware of Atlanta’s crazy traffic (I’m from Seattle, so I’ve been there & done that), and would like to not have a super long commute (up to 40 minutes max). Any suggestions, tips or advice?

Thanks!
