@BananaPancakes: I still say let's Skype it out ;) Assuming you have interest left in figuring it out.

And, yes, borrow what you can to try. As you can see from the comments, no two people are exactly the same in their tastes.

I loved the Moby for the early days, and then the Ergo once he was around 3 months or so. We also had a baby bjorn, but it always hurt my back. I purchased a ring sling (Sakura Bloom) before he was born, too, but I could never get the hang of it. @Mrs. Twine even sent me a video of her using one to try and school me, but alas, I am ring-sling-stupid. I'd try to borrow a sling if you could to see if you like it before committing.

for a newborn I like the babybjorn, It provides a good amount of support because of how thick it is. We have the baby bjorn and ergo, we used the baby bjorn for the first few months and then switched to the ergo

Ok, so I honestly never liked the Moby, but if you like it I definitely say stick with that away first! I think you'll find it'll become less supportive earlier with you chasing a toddler while wearing it versus when you could just stand/sway/snuggle in it with your first.

I don't like Ergos either, honestly. I think they're bulky compared to other structured carriers out there. But again, if you like the ergo, stick with that!

I love ring slings. I will never stop loving them. I'm 18 weeks pregnant and still use one with my 17 month old. I can get a baby securely in a ring sling in like 10 seconds... so useful when you need a quick trip into a gas station or something. I just put two ring sling videos on my blog and I'll be putting a newborn ringsling video up in a few weeks once I can steal my friend's new baby to make a video, lol.

I would choose a mei tai over a soft structured carrier (like an ergo) any day. I think you are more likely to get a comfortable fit with a mei tai since you don't have to eff with buckles; just tie it as tight as you need to... done.

Woven wraps can be intimidating but they're SO versatile. If you're a wear your baby on a daily basis kinda mom I 100% recommend looking into woven wraps. If you have any specific questions about them, lemme know.

I could never figure out the slings/moby and just didn't wear my youngest much until he was old enough to use the Ergo. He is 16 months today and I can still put him in the Ergo comfortably! The Ergo has been such a life saver for me whenever we go somewhere that isn't stroller friendly or just for a quick trip to the store when I have my oldest with me.

I've been thinking about the same thing too, and my plan is to wear in the Moby in the early days, then in the Ergo later on. I'm so happy that I've gotten practice in baby wearing before chasing down a toddler while wearing an infant!

The Moby will be nice and cozy for the first couple of months until the little one gets too heavy for that kind of stretchy wrap. A ring sling is awesome and quick once you get the hang of it. We have a mei tai that we love for longer wearing, and it's easy to nurse in as well.

I had a Moby and an Ergo so just the same as you  I thought they were both fine for a newborn, and I still use my Ergo with my nine-month-old really comfortably. I'm not a babywearing expert as I've only worn her in those two but, the thing I've had drilled into me is about making sure baby's hips are properly supported. My LO had hip dysplasia so I had to make sure I didn't get a 'crotch dangler' but here is a fabulous blog post explaining which are the best baby carriers for hip health and why: http://babiesbulldogsandus.blogspot.com.au/2013/08/baby-carriers-101.html

It mostly all comes down to personal preferece; there are very few absolutey trues when it comes to babywearing. Length of your wrap or sling is a true limiting factor, and price can be a true limiting factor... I would suggest you try whatever you can get your hands on and see what you like. Many people find mei teis and ring slings to be nice for quick/easy, personally I prefer the versatility of a woven and have recently been further converted to shorties for everyday use. I'd be happy to be a resource for you as you try to investigate your options! :)

@Rainbow Sprinkles: I have 2 Mayas and a Comfy Joey. The Maya is my fav! A lot of people on HB like Sleeping Baby Production ring slings too, but I could never book a sewing slot with the maker - she does them custom. I've noticed on her FB page she's been offering a lot more slots lately though!

@grizz: which ring slings do you prefer?

That was one thing that was tough about the Moby...the time it took to tie it.

I have an Ergo, a Moby, a pouch sling, and a couple of ring slings. Of all of them, i love my ring slings because I can pop DS in and out of them in about 2 seconds. I can just switch carries as he grows bigger, so I like the versatility. I've worn him in a tummy to tummy hold since he was born. I really want to try a woven wrap though - I've heard and read awesome things about them! With a woven, you could either wear W OR the new baby or both!

I'll tell you about wovens vs. the Moby tomorrow! But I love both for different reasons/ ages. I'd probably pick a woven wrap over a ring sling or Moby if pushed to make a decision.

OK. So I am going to have a newborn in a few months (eek!).

I currently have a Moby Wrap and an Ergo. The Moby was a freakin' lifestyle when W was an infant.

I think I will babywear even MORE this time around because it will free up my hands and allow me to stay active with DD #1.

My question is: Is the Moby a good enough option for babywearing a newborn/young infant? I keep reading about slings, ring slings, and woven wraps. What are the benefits of these carriers over the Moby?

Is there a situation I would use a sling over a Moby? Is a woven wrap better than a Moby? Why? Can you even carry newborns in ring slings?

I know nothing about the alternative types of carriers out there, but I really want to become a babywearing expert. :) Please enlighten me and tell me--if I should buy another carrier, what should it be? What are the pros and cons?

ETA: I am not worried about "being too hot" since I will be baby wearing through the winter months.
