Wow! Such great advice! I borrowed a week's worth of BG Flips and Freetimes, plus a Glowbug, a Fuzzibunz, and maybe something else? M is in his first cloth tonight!

We kept it as simple as possible going with 100% BG Freetimes from the beginning (well as soon as she grew out of newborn size cloth) and it's been perfect. It does depend on your baby's thigh chunkiness though.

I have two brands I enjoyed in particular. Best Bottoms are covers with snap-in inserts. You get the ease of a cover and prefolds without the bulk. My other favorite is Funky Fluff. It's also a snap-in insert system. You can use it as an AIO, pocket or AI2. I really love the ease of Best Bottoms and the versatility of Funky Fluff.

My twins are 7 months old and we are using pockets. We have tried (in the following order)...
1) GMD prefolds & snappi & cover
2) BG AIO (newborn)
3) BG Freetime and elementals
4) pockets (all kinds... BG 4.0 & 5.0, Fuzzibunz, Kawaii, Nicki's, Charlie Banana).

We prefer pockets over BG freetimes. Microfiber inserts did not work for us. They never got clean. We stuff with prefolds that had from our prefold & snappi days (very early on) I don't mind stuffing. I stuff while the babies are down for their nap.

Most of our stash is BG and I do prefer them. I have some Kawaii, Nicki's and they aren't bad. They are in our regular rotation. I have a couple fuzzibunz (bought new from Costco for about $10 each... check it out before you buy used.) The fuzzibunz are okay. They don't have rise snaps, but they do have adjustable elastics. They work okay. I think you just have to be careful not to tighten it too much that it shows in inner microfiber (which will make it wick). I think without the rise snaps, you have a bit more extra fabric there. Some people love them. Maybe when the babies are bigger the lack of rise snaps isn't an issue and the adjustable elastics come in handy. Maybe? I'm sticking with them for now. I do like that they have the 3 button hip snaps (BG and other brands do not).

I do have some brand new fuzzibunz that I will be selling. I should post on the classifieds.

Anyway, I'm liking the pocket diapers still.

I still have some elementals (freetimes... will sell or trade soon). I also have a stash of flip diapers. Hoarding them just in case I end up hating stuffing pockets. Oh, flips or other covers are great to put on top of disposable diapers. We had our first diaper blowout (eww!) last week while we were treating a diaper rash.

Oh, from my experience going from prefolds & snappi to AIO and then to just stuffing a prefold in a pocket... has really made me appreciate not have to fumble around with a snappi. I didn't particularly like touching the wet prefold to take the diaper off. There is a learning curve with prefolds and snappi and I'm glad we did that first because it's a bit trickier. Not hard or difficult, but really got us to fine tune our cloth diaper skills since you learn how to put on a prefold to prevent leaks and tighten the snappi. Also, I'm so glad I had the prefolds when the microfiber inserts just didn't work for us. We are still using the preemie sized prefolds, too. They work great as doublers.

Oh, you can see why I don't like the freetimes because it's made out of microfiber. The elementals are nice but one complaint from my DH who does the laundry is if it's a poopy diaper, it can be a pain in the butt to spray the poop form black and front of the layers. In a pocket diaper there's only one side to spray poop from. Elementals are a good back up and they are very trim.

Oh, I have tried GMD workhorse (fitted) diapers. They are nice so you don't have to worry about folding. You can get snaps or snapless. The snapless ones are more popular (from what I hear because it allows you to get a better fit with the use of a snappi). I had a tried both... but like I said I didn't like touching a wet diaper to get the the snappi off.

We do BG Freetimes and I love them- so easy and we have 1 4.0 which I hate to stuff.

I will say that the attached inserts (I don't know what they're called since they're not inserted) tend to roll some in the wash- not a huge deal as I just fold the other end over the rolled end so it's comfy for babe. This is my second kid using same diapers.

Another vote for prefolds and Thirsties covers! They were so easy and simple for us, and I think I only had a problem with leakage once. Once she started walking, we had no problems either. They did make her bum look a little bigger, but I just went up a size in pants and it was fine.

@junebugsmama: We just did a tri folded prefold until 22 months when we potty trained. We didn't have any issues when he started walking.

I think trifolded prefolds are just as easy as AI2, but they are bulkier. Now that he is potty trained half his shorts from last summer are too big in the waist.

@Mrs. Oatmeal: 12 wouldn't be enough for us, but that's because LO poops a lot. If you figure you change every 2 hours when they're awake and then a bonus change for every poop, that wouldn't get me through the day. But it is a great starting point to see if that brand works for you and how many you actually need.

@junebugsmama: LO isn't walking yet, but we always use a snappi. We may switch to pockets when he's on solids and is mobile.

Thank you, everyone!!
I'm going to borrow a few different styles from friends to try out. As excited as I was to find some used, it seems lots of people really like the flexibility of pockets/all in twos.

Spin off question!! Would the pack of 12 diapers (pockets) be enough? 12 covers, 12 inserts and 6 nighttime inserts.

I would recommend starting small with a few different brands before you commit to one style or brand. I was sure thirsties covers and prefolds would be it for us. Economical, I like the idea of reusing the covers, and I bought enough for a stash for 2-3 days. I am using them because it's what I bought, but it turns out the thirsties covers don't work great for our guy. He tends to leak out the top. I much prefer covers that have a flap in front like flip or my favorite wolbybug. He always stays dry in those. And the covers didn't work at all for nighttime. The only solution I've found for nights is BG 4.0 stuffed with microfiber and hemp or CBI.

So the moral is buy one or two at a time until you know what really works for your baby! I'm slowly getting the diapers I really want but I wish I hadn't spent so much on the thirsties.

I wouldn't have any problem buying used diapers in good condition. Just make sure you bleach before putting on baby.

It seems like good used condition diapers go for 50- 60% off retail price.

I've never used Fuzzibuns, so I can't comment there. We've got BumGenius 4.0s, both pockets and AIOs. I prefer the pockets, because I think they're less bulky and give a better fit. They're also easier to dry. I think more important to me though is having snaps over Velcro.
As for buying used, it's not a bad thing, but you may end up doing more troubleshooting than with new ones. With LO1, the brand new diapers gave us no trouble at all! Using them 3 years later with LO2, we're having some issues (mainly leakage, from what I think is stretched elastic).

We actually prefer the pockets and I really don't think it's that much work stuffing them. We have 14 pockets and 10aios. We wash Wednesdays and Saturdays. I really love cloth diapering and am glad we jumped in.

Another vote for a prefolds and covers like flip covers or thirstiescovers.

Pros:
Cost efficient
You only need a few covers
It's hard to destroy a prefold.. No special detergent needed and no special rules to follow
Prefolds are great for other uses: burp cloths, tuck in chest at night to absorb leaky breastmilk, even rags or towels in a pinch

Cons:
Bulkier on baby's bum. Fine when it's no-pants weather but some tight pants won't fit right

I prefer pockets! It's so easy to customize your absorption. My favorites are AppleCheeks, RumpARooz, and BumGenius. I've never used FuzziBunz.

My nanny family used fuzzibunz and we love them. We are using them on kid #2 and they have held up amazingly well. I'm a huge fan of them and will buy this brand for my future children if I have them.

One babysitting family used profolds and I hated them so much. Another family used BG and I wasn't a fan of those either. It is just a personal choice.

Bookmarking!

I'm anticipating the same issue.

My plan is to get several AIOs (for husband to start, and for grandparents or other people not familiar with cloth). And pockets for myself, and eventually hubby after he gets the hang of it.

So my stash will probably look like AIOs and pockets with a mix of middle to high end.
