@Mrs. Oreo: If you have tight spaces, make sure you have a threaded pole it can be attached to. I think it's the same you'd probably use for rolling ceilings.

@MaryM: @T.H.O.U.: @Rocker2014: WHAT! This is like magic. I'm definitely buying that!

@PawPrints: I'm hoping a very light gray would allow us to not have to do crazy prep for it. Fingers crossed!

@CakeLady: @starchild: I would love to hire professionals. DH would rather DIY, which means I have to do some work too! So I appreciate everyone's input. You're all helping put me at ease about taking on such a big project!

Second the saran wrap in the fridge tip -- getting the cans out and clean up is a bigger hassle than painting itself, and it's convenient if you just have a short amount of time and want to do a quick section somewhere. Also, the edger tool is a lifesaver. It can be done, but definitely take it one room at a time! Good luck. :)

We painted almost all of our last house - ceilings, walls, trim - ourselves and it took almost a weekend per room. It was really hard work, it turned out pretty well and at the time we had the time to put into it. As a point of contrast, we just closed on a house and hired professionals to paint 6 rooms. They did an amazing job and it took them less than a full day to do the whole job. It was definitely worth the expense in my book.

We don't use drop cloths either. Just pay attention and wipe if you see a drip. DH painted an entire playroom on Saturday with no tape or drop cloth and the wall-to-wall carpet is unscathed. Easy in easy out.

I came to post about the item @MaryM: linked, it is great!!

I agree about taping, I've always done better without it. I sometimes make guards out of cardboard when I am doing delicate hand areas. I'm not sure exactly how to describe it, but i hold it with my other hand where I would have tape to catch any drips or splashes in detail areas. (Like above baseboards).

We've done this several times. Right now since I'm pregnant, DH is doing the whole house by himself . Just walls no ceilings though. We keep it manageable by cutting way down on prep work: all we do is remove wall plates. No taping! DH learned the "cutting in" technique years ago and he's very good at it. And we go for light colors so no need for primer or second coat. A room goes pretty quickly that way.

This tool is ingenious for edging. And it's also super helpful for getting into tight spaces (like between a vanity and the wall) where a brush or roller won't fit

@Mrs. Oreo: FYI we skipped most taping but alwaped the baseboards because paint splatters tend to fall down even just from rolling t on the walls. And then certain hard to reach spots, like window or door trim near a corner where it would be impossible to hand paint without getting it on the trim. Definitely use Frog tape over freshly painted surfaces instead of regular blue painters tape. Good luck.

@Mrs. Oreo: One other thing we did was use old baby food jars. After we were done painting, I poured just a tiny bit in the jar. When we needed a touch up spot, I had a little paint I could easily grab and touch up with.

@mrswin: I love YHL, so I was hoping to find a post about this. Thanks for the link!!! DH mentioned a paint sprayer as well, so definitely gonna look into that.

@purplelilac: I wouldn't have a problem doing it by hand with an angled brush, especially if tape seems to be a pain in the butt afterwards. I like the idea of the really tiny brushes for touch ups. 👍🏼

@ladybee: oooh thanks for letting me know what system worked for you!!

I appreciate everyone's advice! DH and I will likely start this project late Sept/early Oct so that we can open doors and windows without the yucky Midwest humidity. 😜

We just painted 2,400 sq feet so smaller. But we did it in a system. I washed all the ways. Then DH primed all the ceilings. The next day we painted them all (BM Simply White) and while we had the paint out we did the trim. We let that dry over night and then we went room by room painting the first coat and then the second. Where we taped it turned out like crap so I took my time and went by hand.

I'm going to go against the grain here and suggest to skip tape. It takes forever and as others have pointed out it doesn't always work. Instead invest in two really good quality angled brushes and keep a wet towel in your belt to clean up any paint that gets on the wrong surface right away. I also use tiny brushes (think kids paint brushes) to do a touch up at the end as needed.

@Mrs. Oreo: I read a couple of blogs (YHL and Bower Power) and I know when YHL moved into their most recent house and they painted a whole bunch of trims and doors, they invested in a paint sprayer to spray all of the trim and ceilings before doing the walls because then the didn't have to worry about being too careful with the trim.

Here is a post where they talk about their process
http://www.younghouselove.com/2013/05/buh-bye-blue-trim/
Might be worth considering if you can just cover the floors

Good luck! Second that the prep work is very important, and would also say it can be as time consuming as painting. Are you going to have help from his family? With a bunch of people, each doing a different job (wall cleaner, drop cloth-er, taper, wall painter, trim painter)

If you will be taping off trim, etc., I reco:
-using Frog tape
-locking the edge of the tape by painting over it with white paint first. then after it dries, painting on your color. Helps keep it from bleeding under the tape and gives a clean line.

@Mrs. Oreo: are the walls and ceilings in good shape already? Our walls had a lot of nail holes and wall paper and things like that so prepping too way more time than painting itself. I agree with taking it one room at a time. Otherwise it'snot that hard, just time consuming. And get some good trim brushes- I liked the one Young House Love recommended.

@Veggie: Wow! That must've been a headache. :meh:

We do have two stories + basement. I was worried about painting that high up, but DH and his dad are confident they can do it themselves with their ladders. We'll see come time to actually do it!

We plan to paint our ceilings first. Our whole house has a cream theme. Our trims also need to be whitened up more.

This is the look we're going for, as we have similar floors. Eventually, we will stain our wood floors a little darker. We only have a "smaller" portion of our house with wood floors, so I don't think it'll be too much of a task vs an entire house.

We painted our whole house over last summer before getting our floors refinished. We are in the process of installing new trim now! So a fail for you, we painted our ceilings (a tinted color not just the basic ceiling paint as it was too cool and we were going for warm tones), to prep we taped up the walls with plastic so any drips wouldn't leave marks on the wall. After painting it looked great so we took down the plastic and tape, and painted the walls. Then realized the ceilings were a little splotchy so we had to retape and plastic the walls because now drips would have been a huge deal! When we took down the tape, it took the wall color with it! It was so frustrating. We didn't buy cheap primer or paint so I have no clue what happened. Anyway, do you have a staircase? Ours has a landing so theres a spot that is two stories and we hired someone to paint the two walls, we tried but didn't feel comfortable on our rigged scaffolding!

@Mrs. Oreo: my dad told me about the trick. slows the paint down from drying out. As long as they are well wrapped and cold they stay wet and you don't have to wash every time. His other tips were a nail hole in the rim of the paint can for it to drip back in, and using garbage bags to line your roller tray.

We have very minimal furniture, mainly because we're just now buying the major stuff (couches, dining room set), so that's what making us want to do it now vs later.

it's all about prep work. wiping down walls/baseboards, taping off areas, drop cloths.

We did our entire place before we moved it (which was a good call, much easier without furniture). I recommend doing the ceilings first, then I prefer walls then trim. We would store the brushes and rollers wrapped in saran wrap in the fridge between coats/overnight.

Take it one room at a time. I've painted most of our house at this point (5 years in) and it looks great but I can only imagine trying to do it all at once would be overwhelming.

DH and I made the decision to paint our entire home (all 3200 SF) - walls and ceilings. He and his side of the family are DIY-ers and extremely handy, so he refuses to hire a professional. Our ceilings aren't incredibly high, but looking around, I know it's gonna be a TON of work.

Has anyone successfully done this? Any fails?
