Yes, this is a problem. When I was a kid, my class actually wrote with ink pens, the kind you fill from an inkwell. The pens were awesome, but I did have a lot of ink stains on my hands. There was a trick to cut down on the stains - you'd put a piece of blotter paper over what you just wrote. I guess with markers, you don't even need special paper, any sheet of paper will do.

Another lefty who uses scissors right-handed. The lefty scissors at preschool were uncomfortable to use so I just used my right hand from then on!

I’m a lefty, and I agree with the advice to use right-handed scissors. Unless they’ve changed a lot since I was a kid, the lefty ones don’t actually cut. The ink on hands is inevitable; we learn to wear it as a badge of honor :)

I agree with the previous poster who said to have her learn to use right-y scissors. It’s what is going to be more readily available and (weirdly, at least in the 80s) lefty scissors always seemed more dull than righty scissors.

As for pens/pencils, get used to the “inky Pinky”: it’s just the badge of honor for being a lefty :silly:

I’d suggest to have her learn right handed scissors. The rest of her life it’s pretty likely that leftie scissors won’t be available.
I’m left handed but really ambidextrous. I write with the left, cut with my right, throw left, kick right. Golf right, snowboard left,
Oh and ink on hands will happen for the rest of her life. Flat notebooks (not chunky spirals) help. I prefer fluid ink (there’s a word for that but I’m sleep deprived) pen vs rollerball. Roller balls tend to make more of a mess. Learning cursive was terrible using the slant board (but they don’t even they anymore)
Oh! Buy harder lead pencils instead of soft no 2. They are harder to find but don’t smudge.

Definitely scissors... they made a huge difference in my Dd4's fine motor skills. Other than that we haven't bought anything special but I too have noticed her hand all marked up and smeared from writing !

My sister is a lefty and recently bought my dd some left handed pens, left handed shoe tying practice board and lefty notebook . I don't know if any of them are super useful since we haven't tried them out yet, I think my sister was just so excited to have a fellow lefty to bestow gifts upon

Scissors (unless using ambidextrous ones) and a baseball mitt are the only things we have for our 3.5 year old who has a left hand preference. As kids get older the binding on notebooks can be bothersome when writting.
Following for more ideas.

Now that dd is in preschool and they are learning to write she is clearly a lefty.

Poor girl comes home with marker all over her hand....

Are there any products / school supplies that are specifically made for lefties or anything that will help her as she goes to school??
