@justjules: We live next door, in Hoboken. And we moved from Dallas 6 years ago, so we've been through this. We moved to JC first and really loved it there too, but when we decided to buy, we were open to places in both JC and Hoboken and we found the right apartment in Hoboken, so ended up moving here in year 2 (right before we had kiddo 1)and have been here ever since.

What's your budget? Where in JC is your husband working, and where in the city? Because my advice will vary based on those things. But just a couple of things off the top of my head now--the waterfront area/grove st/Paulus hook/Hamilton park/Newport areas of JC are the trendiest and most expensive. However, there are other places you can live in JC or surrounding areas that are fine and where you won't have to necessarily downsize. Like JC Heights or Journal Square or even Union City or Weehawken. Waterfront JC and Hoboken are expensive, compared to Houston. Like even Highland Park in Dallas, where all the rich people live has a lower $/sq ft than where we live now. Except Highland Park has 10k sq ft mansions and that doesn't exist at basically any price point in this area, haha.

But we do love it here. There's public pre-k in both JC and Hoboken for 3 and 4 year olds too, and they both have good programs, so I'm happy to talk more about that if you are interested. =)

The family (DH, DS- 2.75, DD- 15mo) and I are moving outside of NYC at the end of August!

We are moving from Houston- a big city but very different in terms of culture and living experience. DH is from the area and I am from Boston so we have been trying to move back to the North East to be a bit closer to family/the best coast.

We are going to move into my in laws basement (an hour away from the city) as we work out the details (Eg- I will be looking for a job/ childcare/ where we want to live etc). His sister lives in JC and that is where DH will be working (though some in Midtown as well) so that is where we are looking now to rent.

So many questions for you Bees out there:

Any general tips for the area?
Any apartment advice? (we currently live in a nice 3bed/2bath so will downsize considerably to fit our budget)
Do you like where you live?
How do you adopt to city life? (stroller situation, grocery shopping etc.)

Any and all experiences are welcome!
Thanks
