When I went back to school, I got an inexpensive Dell.

It doesn't get a ton of use because we use tablets for most stuff. I use it occasionally for working from home, and used it for papers and homework for 2 years of grad school. I've had it for 5ish years and it's still running absolutely fine.

When I bought it, I was replacing my parent's old dell that they'd had for ages.

With light/mostly web browsing word processing work, you really won't need much.

We use both Word and Google Docs at work a lot. For things that need to be printed out, I do have to say I prefer Word.

If you want something without lots of extras on it, I'd highly recommend looking at Dell's business class laptops. They don't come with a lot of extra software bloat, just the bare minimum and I've found them to last longer (my first HP burned out the hard drive, battery and motherboard right as the warranty went out).

They're pretty configurable too so you don't end up with an amazing graphics card when you'll be mostly using office software: http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/laptops?~ck=mn

If you can get away with using online apps for everything (e.g. google docs or office 365) I'd go for a chromebook.

@T.H.O.U.: What's an OS? Lol I told you I'm horrible at this stuff. I would want it for a little longer because DH will still be in school after I graduate. Hmm maybe I should just bite the bullet and get the more expensive one.

@bubblegum: What is the life you want to get out of the device? If you want to use it for a year or two and then be done with it, I would go with the cheap $200 one. If you really want to try to hold onto it, I would get the $350 one.

@bubblegum: Also many computers are going away from CD/DVD drives. My mac does all OS upgrades for free over the internet.

@bubblegum: Well for a chromebook you dont install an OS. it uses the Google Chrome OS which is a very basic limited OS which is nice because less maintenance (bugs). But for spreadsheets and stuff you would be using the free google apps.

@bubblegum: Between those two, heres what I view as the advantage of the extra $150 cost:

Better processor (speed)
Double the storage (500 vers 1TB)
More RAM (speed)
Looks like better battery life but I wouldn't really count this too much because you probably wouldn't notice a difference.

@T.H.O.U.: I don't know much about chromebooks but I just looked them up and many that I found do not have a DVD/CD input, which I need to install the Microsoft package (right?)

Yeah it would be for papers, e-mail, web browsing, powerpoint and excel.

What school work do you need to do? Email, web browse and type papers?

Hello everyone! I'm looking to buy a new laptop! Strictly for school work. Our old laptop is way too slow because DH filled it with crap so this would be only for school work, nothing less. I want to go with the cheaper option but would it make any difference? I know nothing about computers so please help.
