@Applesandbananas: I did. I think it was a combination of a little bit of allergy and the dry hospital air with a dash of exhaustion. In the afternoon I went and stayed until they sent me home at 9 :)

Nicu nurse here.. If parents in our unit are questioning whether or not they might be coming down with something we offer them a mask. If a mask isn't an option in that unit I just wouldn't visit for a day and see how you feel. Usually if you are feeling funny the illness will show its lovely face soon and I wouldn't risk spreading germs in the NICU. Hope you feel better! (My favorite thing to make when I feel like I may be coming down with something is warm water, a tablespoon applecider vinegar, a slice of lemon squeezed in and a tablespoon of honey. It has kept me well many times. I also use to take airborne before I was pregnant)

Neither of us got sick during our NICU stay, but it would have killed me to have to stay away from him... Trust your gut about whether you're sick, or just exhausted / winter stuffy.

<hugs> having your newborn in the NICU is so tough. Hang in there!

I would just trust your instincts and see how you feel later. Its so hard in those first days to know if you are just stressed out, run down, exhausted or actually sick.

I didn't go in the one day I was really sick. It sucks they won't let you in if you ask for a mask. The sick nurses/docs at ours wore masks, these guys just don't come in?

Our twins were in the NICU for 3.5 months. Sometimes it was tough to tell the difference between a legit illness and the effects of fatigue/stress. That being said, we played it safe and stayed home if we weren't sure. Sometimes we would trade off visits, if one of us didn't feel well. It was difficult, but we felt it was the right thing to do.

@Mrs. Jacks: thankfully neither of us got sick during our son's nicu stay. but it was also spring/summer. hoping very much that it's allergy related and that you can be with your sweet baby soon.

I have no NICU experience, but when I feel a cold coming on I start doing a nasal saline rinse several times daily and it usually seems to help keep the cold at bay.

@jedeve: yes, definitely a heat wave. Allergies might very well be the culprit.
@Applesandbananas: it is so dry in the unit, it's just hard to tell if you are sick or tired.

I'm cleaning the house this morning and taking it easy and seem to feel fine. If I continue to feel ok, I'll go in this afternoon.

I would drink some tea and try to sneak nap. (I know the nap is hard with other littles at home. I found that helpful when E was in the NICU. Also make sure you are getting a well balanced meal, your body needs the nutrients to stay well.

Tough situation. I wasn't sick when we were in the NICU but I would have probably done what you're doing - take the morning off from the NICU (as incredibly difficult as that is) and reassess in the afternoon. For what it's worth, I always have a scratchy throat in the morning this time of year.

No NICU experience, but wanted to say I'm sorry you're not feeling 100%. Obviously, if there's any way you can get some sleep, that might help ward off a cold. I know the evidence for supplements is iffy, but I swear by EmergenC.

@Mrs. Jacks: the entire time LO was in the NICU I felt like I was coming down with something. The combination of stress, exhaustion, fear, the hospital, recovery from birth, etc. I just felt like a hot mess. I made sure to religiously wash and sanitize my hands and sometimes I just stuck my hands into the isolette holes.

dh and i weren't sick when A was in the nicu, but i did see some other parents who wore a mask and only visited for short periods of time while they weren't feeling well. we didn't allow visitors if they were sick, but if it was just a slight cold maybe just ask for a mask and don't hold him. is that an option or will they just say no if you have a cold?

Oh no :( I hope you're not getting a cold! And i hope he's not in the NICU very long. I had a very mildly scratchy throat about 3 days ago....it took 3 days to really blow up and hit me.

E was born in April and I don't think either of us were fighting anything off by then...maybe allergies? I can't remember :(

What did you do if you started feeling like you were getting a cold? I won't be allowed in the NICU with my son if I'm sick.

I have a barely scratchy throat right now and I can't tell if it is from the dry air in the hospital or if I might come down with something.

I'm so paranoid to get my baby sick but I can't imagine not seeing him. I wouldn't be allowed in if I asked to wear a mask.

Any suggestions? As of right now, we have Mr.Jacks going in early today so that I can see if my body will tell me if it is sick or not.
