Im with @Grace: Thank me at the time. Even when I get a thank you card in the mail, i barely glance at it before I throw it away. Especially for baby gifts. I HATED that I felt obligated to send a thank you note for every gift, dinner, etc we received while trying to care for a newborn and figure out the whole motherhood thing. So now whenever I give a baby gift, I make sure to write that I do not want a thank you card. She has other things to worry about.

I so hate the thank-you after the fact stuff. I'd rather receive a sincere thank you when the gift is received and be done with it. If it's a situation where I sent a gift but wasn't there, I'd like the phone call more. I can catch up with the person then and we can talk about how life is going, etc. Thank you cards get read and then thrown in the garbage.

I like receiving mail so I would prefer a note. I don't always have time to pick up the phone so I when people call me, it usually goes to voicemail.

Although, if it's someone I haven't talked to in a while, I'll call them back.

I sent mail for wedding and baby shower gifts but I always call for birthday gifts just because to me it seems more personal. Whenever I call people it always ends up being hour+ long conversations!

@Rubies: I voted that calling is better because I think (especially for older relatives) they'd rather speak to you in person than get a note. Maybe that's just my family :)

I call my mom and sister when they send things. Other times I'll text, email or write a card. Depends on who the gift is from and the occasion

I'm so baffled because I LOVE receiving notes and think it's classy and wonderful. But isn't it more personal to speak to the person?

Interesting...

I voted the same. It depends who is doing the calling. If I sent my mom a gift, she wouldn't send me a thank you. She would call me and vice versa.

If calling me is easier for you, I'd rather have that than no thank you at all which I will always remember (I do)!!

There isn't anything like a handwritten note. If I call someone on the phone and tell them thank you I still send a note.

I think it depends. For our wedding we called everyone individually to say thanks, its the more common thing to do among our friends and people appreciate that much more than a mailed thank you card.

I love sending and receiving mail so I always do a handwritten thank you. I HATE talking on the phone so I would never call someone to thank them even though it's an equally nice gesture.

I think a hand-written note wins every time. But there are relationships where a phone thank you will work, too (really close relationships, i.e. mom, best friend, etc.)
