If you're looking for something with the quality of a dSLR, DH got me a Nikon that syncs to my phone.

I used to be a professional photo journalist but stopped taking pictures for fun years ago because of the bulk of my cameras. Once DH got one that synced to my phone, I started back up again a bit more. It's so much easier that way than having to download to a computer!

@Mamaof2: gotcha. Yeah iPhones compress a bit so if you want to blow it up and have to crop at all you might struggle. Have a look at the canon s120 and g9x mark II. The s120!8/ extremely pocketable but the g9x will give you more room to learn if you want to dip your toe into having more control over the pictures you take

I have more or less stopped using my dslr in favor of my Fuji. I do get it out for more photo shoot type situations but I don’t travel with it. But I always have my iPhone X on me and man that thing takes nice pics. Portrait mode is really a thing of beauty. I just don’t care for how the new iPhones render colors and shadows.

@Littlebit7: I have an iPhone 7 - took it to Portugal last year and did get some great pics but they are only like 2MP - wanted to enlarge some and figured that was too small!

@erinbaderin: Right?! We're going on a cruise this winter and last cruise I just had my phone and my photos weren't great, so I wanted something decent, but still small. I LOVE this one! I'm still getting the hang of it, but you can store images in RAW like a dSLR for editing, which is super helpful!

I have a dSLR which I LOVE, but it was definitely too bulky to carry around for certain trips, so I just bought this Canon PowerShot G9 X Mark II and I LOVE it! Fancy enough to fill some limited dSLR needs, but simple, easy to use, and slim!

Ok so I’ll give you some point and shoots that offer a mid range zoom (24-70ish) and easyish learning curve
And as an aside all of the camera people have mentioned have an auto mode or “green box” as my husband calls it.
Panasonic lumix lx10
Canon g9x or the s120 (I’m not sure what generation it’s on now)

Really though if you have a newer iPhone it will take pretty great photos. A newer camera might not get you what you want unless you put some time into learning it.

Check out the Nikon One, I have been looking to buy a nicer camera for a while, and this is what I have narrowed it down to when I get the money together. It has a couple different models at different price points, but is point and shoot.

@Mamaof2: You could set everything on auto and it will take beautiful pictures still. If later you wanted to learn more, you'd have the flexibility to do manual settings. For landscapes starting out, I'd set a higher number for aperture (so the image will be sharp corner to corner) and set shutter speed and ISO to auto. For taking pictures of kids, especially inside where there's a lot of clutter, it is great to set the aperture to a small number, which will blur out the background (and simultaneously allow a higher auto shutter speed, which is good for indoors). With just these two facts in mind, you can already improve quite a bit over what a plain point and shoot will do.

Nope, nix the sony. There's a auto mode, but not really worth the size of you're looking for a point and shoot .

@periwinklebee: @skinnycow: @Littlebit7: @PurplePumps: Should add I want to just point and shoot- no adjusting settings (too difficult for me - haha)

Are these cameras good for that?

I love my Sony a6000. I only have the kit lens but it's all I've needed for most situations. I like the flexibility to get different lenses, and is very compact.

I’d get into a Fuji system as mentioned above and get a zoom lens that is fairly wide (15 mentioned above). You are going to want a wiiiiiide angle to capture all of those sweeping views. So when it mentions the lens, for landscapes you want wide or ultra wide anywhere from 10-15 mm
I have the xt-20 with a few lenses and I love it but it’s more than you want to spend.

I have this one and really like it:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RKNND2W/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's way under your price range, so maybe you're looking for something a little nicer but this one is easy to use and pictures look great.

It's a bit above the price range, but the new fujifilm x-t100 with 15-45 mm lens ($699) looks super promising. Could get it tax free ordering from b&h if you are outside ny/nj. The zoom would be nice for travel. I love, love the fujifilm mirrorless system, the pics are amazing. You could I think get a used fuji x100t (comes with a fixed prime lens) for under $500.
