How professional are you wanting to go? We have a Nikon D700, but Mr. studied art - thus the high grade camera. We love it! If you're looking for something more user friendly, Canon is the way to go, though!

We have the Canon 50D. It's an older model and we bought it from a photographer off of Craigslist. We were going to get a rebel, but our photographer friend walked us through all the pros-cons and we decided on the 50D. The biggest con to the rebel for us was that the rebel is made more of plastic and wasn't as durable, long-lasting as a 50D (I am a klutz and wouldn't put it past me to drop it).

Also, we knew we would want a nicer lens than the kit lens that comes with the rebel, so we ended up ultimately paying less in the long run. If you like the fuzzy background in pictures with the focus very crisp, I'd recommend a 50MM lense (you can get a 50mm, 1.8 for about $100).

I just sent my DH a link to a review about the Canon Rebel T2i and asking for it for Christmas (plus birthday anniversary valentine's day... it's a little more $$$ than I thought).
This is what I sent him: http://gizmodo.com/5541310/canon-rebel-t2i-review-this-should-be-your-first-dslr
I'm sold.

I think it depends. How much do you want to get into it? If you plan on getting a DSLR and leaving it on Auto, get a rebel. If you plan on learning more about it and becoming more competent, perhaps even using manual, you could go a step or two above that. Most moms are good with a Rebel, though.

I got the Rebel t3i about a month ago and am still learning, but have taken some pictures that I have been really happy with. I didn't expect to be able to use it fully fresh out of the box. The camera will grow with me for awhile.

Another vote for the Canon Rebel! My friend got the Nikon and said it was bit more difficult to use and that some basic features were pretty hidden in the menu. (I can't say for sure though, I have no first hand experience with Nikon) I'm a Canon fan and find them really easy to navigate. And for a great cheap lens with good bokeh, pick up the 50 mm f/1.8 for about $100 also.

I have the canon rebel t2i & am very happy with it! I am looking into buying an additional lens soon because I want to be able to get more bokeh ( that yummy blurry look in the back of the picture)It is very user friendly, & so many people use it that I've found lots of help on youtube, facebook, though friends, etc. Good luck!

I highly recommend the Canon Rebel for your first dSLR! The Mark II is incredible, but the Rebel is much simpler while still producing high-quality photos. Perfect starter camera.

Are you looking for an SLR or a point & shoot? I have both and use them for different things. I take my P&S everywhere in my purse and I take my SLR when there's more of a "picture time" occasion. I love my Canon Powershot S95... it takes great pictures. I have also heard really great things about 4/3 cameras. Great image quality in a small form factor.

I'm looking to upgrade my camera. Right now I just have a regular nikon digital, but I'd like to get a more "professional" camera to take higher quality pictures. Any suggestions out there for something user friendly?
