We usually do a tent. I agree with @sarac: about being flexible. Usually the first night for us is. Little hard to get to sleep. They are always super excited and it takes awhile for them to calm down. The second night and on they are usually so tired from all their exploring and running around that they fall asleep pretty easily. </p> <p>When my kids were toddlers I had to stay in the tent with the, until they fell asleep and we had a small battery lantern that I left on for them throughout the night (we had some afraid of the dark issues for awhile). We took my daughter first when she was about 8 months old, and we've never had a bad time. What really helps is flexibility. If you're very attached to bedtime, to sleeping arrangements, to perfect meals - you're unlikely to enjoy yourself. If you're happy to just hang out until the stars come out and then go crash in a big pile, you'll have way more fun. Her sleep is always crummy and she ended up sharing a blow up mattress with me instead of her pack n play, but otherwise she loved it. We've taken our 3 year old camping many times, his first time at 3 months! We've always stayed in a tent. Luckily he is used to noise and goes down fairly easy.
