Gas is worse in newborns, for sure, but you could try a formula for gas and fussiness.

Have your DH put gas drops in the bottles!

This is totally unhelpful, but my LO was EBF and had the worst gas at those times too, no matter what I ate or how long I burped him. Tummy massage & leg bicycles were the only instant relief and time was the only cure :( I hope that you can experiment with formula and figure out a fix though!

I'm not sure about the specifics, but M is on hypoallergenic formula for a milk protein (and probably soy) intolerance and our GI assumes that she will grow out of it by a year. I'm assuming that a year wouldn't cut it for you though. I bet some other HBers would have recs for gentle formulas!

I am not sure about outgrowing an intolerance, but if you do suspect the formula is the issue I would definitely try to find another brand that might be gentler on his tummy. I think they make kinds that are for gas and tummy sensitivities.

LO has been suffering from painful gas and I suspect that the culprit is the formula we have been using to supplement. DH gives him formula mixed with pumped milk at night and it seems like late night/early morning is when his gas is the worst.

Right now, I am not producing enough when I pump to build a stash and supplement when I go back to work. Will he gain a tolerance for formula once his digestive system matures a bit (he is only 3 weeks)? Or once an intolerance, always an intolerance?
