If he doesn't have a problem with it, I don't see the problem. My husband just went to his GP and asked for one (he was taking meds that may have affected fertility). And when it turnes out that the meds did affect his fertility, we went with the idea of I probably wouldn't get pregnant, but if one good one did get through, that was ok too. Just make sure you two are on the same page.

I would strongly urge you against the "well, you're infertile anyway" method of birth control. One, even if he did have problems, it's unlikely he'd be 100% infertile. Two, it'd likely be quite harmful to your husbands self esteem. Three, does your DH want this info right now or just you? Because the answers will have a big impact on him. The main test for makes is a sperm analysis, which a doctor may recommend if you are having trouble conceiving. But most wouldn't recommend doing until you've been trying for a while, likely 6 months. Four, just because the SA is off doesn't mean you won't conceive. My DH had a severe morphology issue and borderline motility...it took us 9 months to conceive (which is actually in the range of normal) but we did so naturally.

Since you aren't TTC, I would suggest that your SO go see a urologist. They might be the ones who can check that.

The actual IUDs sound like a more attractive option- the Implanon stick in your arm reminds me a lot of the Depo shot and other long-term hormonal methods, while the IUD says, for the Mirena with hormones, that it works in a more localized fashion. The copper one has no hormones at all.

They were not really popular yet 3 years ago, but now that they've been mentioned, I do recall commercials where a lady held up that tiny little T and flexed it.

I really sucked at taking pills- I've missed 4 or 5 at times, and most months missed at least 1. Life was exceptionally crazy (though I know that's no excuse).

@redeyedtreefr0g: Of course! I should also add that there are different types of IUDS...some actually go in your arm (not technically an IUD) there are some that are completely hormone free. I have never used an IUD but I know a lot of Bees do and prefer it hands down to bcp and condoms.

ETA: Here is a site talking about the different types http://m.burlingtoncountytimes.com/blogs/100-percent-preventable/birth-control-the-facts-on-implanon-and-the-iud/article_cf172216-dd27-5841-98a5-8bdcf956179a.html?mode=jqm

@redeyedtreefr0g: I could be wrong but most doctors want you to try without medical intervention for 6 months to a year before testing. This might include a semen analysis.
To be honest, male fertility is just as sensitive a topic as female fertility, so I wouldn't want to put my husband through that just so I wouldn't have to go on birth control. To me, it would be like my husband saying, "can we see if all your eggs are 'bad' so I don't have to worry about pulling out?" But, of course, everyone's relationship is different.
Rather, I would use birth control until the time comes to try, try for several months and then go from there. I get the feeling from your previous post that you arent sure if or when you will have kids, so I might opt for something like Mirena.
Best of luck! :goodluck:

Hello bees! I have a kind of weird question.
Can a man just randomly go and find out if he is capable of reproducing?

If I recall correctly (have to ask his mom again), my husband had a severe illness as a child, and his testicles were inside I think. Whatever the reason, it's been mentioned that he may have fertility issues.

We aren't trying to conceive right now, but I'm about to go to the clinic for an exam (which I want) to get birth control (which I'm not thrilled about). We both prefer sex without condoms, so it seems like if we don't want a baby- birth control is what I've got to do.

But sometimes I wonder if we really even need to bother. It would be nice to know if we could just skip the hassle of birth control. Especially if he is infertile, I would also like to know sooner rather than later so I don't spend all this time waiting patiently, only to find out later if we can't have children. I'd prefer to know.
