I can totally see how your husband could be depressed due to all the changing circumstances. Some people do not respond to change well at all, and these things can trigger depression, even if it's not due to hormones. I think losing a job is particularly hard on men too. I hope things get better!

Yes. It isn't as hormonal as ours, but stems from all of the changes that happen so quickly.

@purrpletulips: Hmmm... it could be general depression stemming from his job loss? Or it could just be the general adjustment to everything. There is SO much going on with the arrival of a baby. You have a lot less time as a couple, for one thing, you're attending to a very needy little person 24 hours a day and it's tough to get out and enjoy any of the things that you used to.

Maybe if you find out more about his feelings specifically you can work on a plan to make things better?

Good to know, that wasn't covered in our prenatal class.

@nskillet and @merdithnyc: I'd agree sleep deprivation can cause his symptoms unfortunately he isn't experiencing any because of DS' arrival. DH sleeps like a rock and has temporarily moved out of our room on the off chance that might wake up because of DS.

I definitely think they can. And if not the type from hormones, definitely circumstantial depression from such a major life event!

LO isn't born yet so don't have experience but the nurse at our pre-natal class covered this and said that yes, dads most definitely can have ppd.

I think, in a way, yes? Although PPD is usually associated with hormones, I do think sleep deprivation, as @Nskillet said, can have some extremely strong negative affects.

Sleep deprivation affects everyone differently. My DH has really struggled adjusting to broken sleep like he didnt anticpate.

Since DS was born 7 weeks ago, DH has been: moody, disconnected, standoffish, quick tempered, and irritable (just a few of his "symptoms"). Can dad's suffer from postpartum depression?

He was similar after DD was born but had lost his job very unexpectedly the week before she was born so I attributed the behavior to that.
