Our US tech told us that it's not just the absence of a "penis" that makes it a girl, it's the presence of the "3 lines" (not sure what those 3 lines are). She pointed to that "area" and said "Ok, i don't see a penis and I definitely see the 3 white lines so I'm 99% sure it's a girl". She said that if she didn't see a penis AND didn't see the 3 white lines, she'd only be 60-70% confident in her answer.

One of Wagon Sr.'s coworkers was told she was having a girl, and it turned out to be a boy.

I've had two ultrasounds around 20 weeks (18 and 20) and they both said it was a girl because they "didn't see anything" down there..... I'm still worried I'll be dressing my boy in pink!! I already gave away all the boy stuff!!!

@skibobrown: that's what I'm hoping too. They told us girl at our 16 week, 18 week, and 20 week u/s so I'm hoping after 3 u/s, 2 techs, and 1 Dr all saying girl, that they have it right! I figure it'd have to be a pretty big coincidence to have it wrong all 3 times, right?

I'm a little bit concerned about this, but I've now had three separate ultrasounds where they told me the baby is a girl. I figure at this point they must have it right... right?

My ultrasound tech said she wasn't allowed to give a 100% certain answer, but said "I've been doing this for over 30 years, and let's say I'm 99% sure its a girl", which was good enough for me. I know some doctors have better ultrasound equipment than others, so if you think your doc has good equipment and experience, I'd probably trust their opinion.

with olive the ultrasound tech told me she was 85% sure it was a girl -- that's the highest she'll go. she told me she'd be 95% sure if it was a boy. once they see the family jewels, i think it's hard to mistake a boy for a girl!

charlie's best friend's mom was told she was having a girl, but it turned out to be a boy...

Interesting! A friend of mine is a bit worried they got the gender wrong so she is only investing in gender-neutral clothing and is going to have two names ready to go -a boy name and a girl name. Is it really possible to get it wrong (if it's a girl) if they see those distinct lines that show the labia? Could those three lines be something else on a boy?

With our first child, we couldn't get an appointment with a reputable doctor so we got an appointment with a random doctor just to do an ultrasound. Well they also did genetic testing, and they told us in our next appointment that our child was definitely a girl.

Later that year, our son Charlie was born! Ultrasounds at the hospital had accurately predicted his sex, but I can't say the experience overall raised my confidence in the accuracy of gender testing!

I agree with the others, I think there's always chance for error. My coworker was told she was having a girl at several ultrasounds (the last one 2 days before she gave birth), however in her dreams the baby was always a boy. Sure enough she had a boy and ended up having to return everything she'd already gotten.

My niece was supposed to be my nephew. The gender prediction was made at an ultrasound that was done early on (12-14 weeks I think) and they never did another US so perhaps a later one would have changed the prediction. But for most of the pregnancy my family expected a boy and ended up getting a girl.
