@MsBAM: yep! I still bedtime nurses when I was home until the day they decided they didn’t need it anymore! Bedtime never seemed to be an issue when I wasn’t home!

@MsMini: Thank you! I think I might try not weaning at all and just go with the flow.... worst case scenario if I’m engorged at work I could always hand express a bit! It’s also good to hear that there’s no issue with bedtime and naps when you’re not around! Do you nurse to sleep when you are home? Maybe I’ll give him sippy cups with water to make sure he knows how to use them that way I don’t have to wean. I have to buy a few different cups. Was gonna try the straw one too and see if he can get the hang of it.

I just wanted to chime in and say you might not need to wean really at all for working shift work. I am an RN and work day and night shifts, and actually worked 12 hour shifts when I had my DS. I live in Canada so had the year off and nursed my older 2 kids until 15/16 months, I didn’t wean at all, nursed them as usual on my days off, never pumped and just wore breast pads at work. It really worked out pretty well! I had a couple of engorged times when I worked 12’s but just nursed as soon as I got home. My kids were both good straw cup users and my hubby and daycare didn’t have any issues with bed/nap when I wasn’t there to do it either! If you want to wean back, I totally understand that though, just wanted to share that it might work better than you think!

@MsBAM: I found that at a year my body was pretty flexible. I stoped pumping at 13 months. It took a few weeks to not need to pump during the days sometimes. But now at almost 17 months we nurse at night, in the morning and on the weekends with no problems. I always feel super full on Monday when I am at work, but it's not a problem (I dont need to pump). When I am gone for 10 hours + I might pump for comfort for myself, like 7 minutes to relive pressure, but it's also ok if i dont.

Nursing is not a all or nothing thing. Even if you weren't going back to work a lot changes after a year. Your baby eats more food and things shift. It's totally normal!

I really like the 360 cups.

@Becky: I do need to wean a bit though to teach him to take a sippy cup while I’m at work. I figure there’s no point of starting up on a bottle at 12m.... should I use the lunch and dinner feed to wean so he can practice with the sippy cup?

At a year they aren’t nursing a lot, and if they are it’s for comfort and not nutrition. Your supply will definitely be fine. If you naturally wean (as in the toddler decides to stop) it’s a progression over time. They’ll drop one feed, then another often ending up with just one evening comfort nursing session. With DD1 I stopped pumping at 10 months because she stopped taking a bottle while I was at work. She nursed during the day when I was with her, and gradually that turned into one comfort feed before bed. She nursed until she was just over a year (maybe 26 months).

@maddyz: This sounds great! But will keeping MOTN feeds make me engorged during the day? Although I want to keep a morning feed so it shouldn’t be an issue....Do you find that you’re engorged during the day at all when you’re at work? I need to get him used to a sippy cup so I was thinking of giving him the sippy cup for lunch and dinner time feeds instead of nursing.... Does that sound reasonable to start? Eventually I’d like to continue feeding him whenever I’m not at work but really need to get him used to sippy cup so he eats when I’m not around. I’m so worried he’ll refuse to eat while I’m trying to wean him! Any good sippy cup suggestions?

@MsBAM: I went back to work three days a week when my little guy was 14 months and didn’t bother pumping but he continued nursing until he was 2.5 and I dried up due to pregnancy. I didn’t suffer from any engorgment and still had plenty of supply for when we’re together.

You could always just wing it and just add in one pump if your supply drops too far...

He’ll be 12mo old when I go back to work. I also want to try and wean because I want to get him used to a sippy cup when I’m not there. Good to hear supply is generally fine. Should I start weaning with lunch and dinner feeds to get him used to the sippy cup and then once I’m back to work and he’s used to it, go back to nursing whenever I’m around him? And hopefully then my supply adjusts?

I work shift work as well but pump. I feed LO in the middle of the night and it’s fine. When I work evenings and he wakes up I feed him. This goes for daywork too. Overall my supply is fine. I think you will fine too if you’re nursing periodically. When you wean your supply may decrease but it will be just enough for when baby eats.

How do I even begin to wean knowing I’ll be swing shifts? Just slowly wean lunch and dinner feeds? But then when I’m on afternoons I’ll be able to nurse for lunch and dinner.... unless I completely cut that out and only nurse mornings and MOTN. I don’t want to be engorged at work...

Your supply will likely adjust to your nursing schedule - I would just suggest gradually working yourself down so you don't get engorged. I stopped pumping at work when my daughter turned one but was able to feed at bedtime and first thing the morning for a couple months before completely weaning.

Well, my 2nd is 13.5 months, only nurses morning/nights (more on the weekends) and she doesn't seem to be annoyed at my supply! I def know something comes out, just not sure how much.

My LO is older and I pumped when I worked odd hours for a long time. But for the last 4 or 5 month I have nursed only when home and not pumped anymore. I missed two weeks of bedtimes recently. Still nursed at night and in the AMs with no problem. I went back to nursing for bedtime when I was home after that with no issue.

My baby is not so baby anymore at 16 months but still a VERY committed nurser. When I have been away a lot he nurses more frequently to get my milk back. It can be annoying having my 16 month old ask to nurse all the time. But I still have plenty of milk and have no interest in weening (well, i would love to stop nursing 3 times a night... but i haven't figured out how to do that yet). I think our strong night time nursing has helped when I am away during the day/evening. I work 4 days a week 9-5:30 and then evenings sometimes, and often for a week or two at a time. I have found my milk to be there when needed.

My daughter just turned one and I am nursing morning, afternoon, and evening at most. On weekends, I may nurse during the day as well. She keeps asking for more, but I seem to have enough to make her happy.

Hi all!

Going back to work in a few months. Just thinking about my weaning options. I need to wean in 3 months. I do shift work (days, afternoons). I know I have to wean but don’t completely want to stop nursing :(

Is it possible to only keep MOTN feeds (if LO wakes) and maybe a morning feed? I won’t always be there for bedtime because of my shift work. But when I’m on days, can I still nurse at bedtime or will I be dried up from not nursing at bedtime for the 2 weeks I’m on afternoons? Just trying to see what my options are.... I’ll be caring for LO during the day too when I’m on afternoons but I’m assuming I’ll be too dried up to nurse during the day after working days for 2 weeks....

Worst case scenario can I ONLY nurse for MOTN feeds or will my supply be too low?

Also I don’t want to pump at work bc I don’t want to have to worry about it. I don’t respond to a pump well. But I can hand express for comfort if engorged.

Thank you!
