@Happygal: if there was beginning to be a problem, they are most familiar with all the pregnancy sustaining interventions and meds and are more likely to detect problems early (like all these betas she's getting). Most OBs will say, "Let's wait and see if this is a miscarriage" and that is it.

I'd suggest making your concerns about the blood draws known to someone (perhaps office manager) and ask that someone else draw your blood. Another option is to request they use a smaller gauge needle so that the stick isn't so big each time. I work in research and we often use butterfly needles because our participants are hard sticks/have really really poor veins.

I would talk to them about making the switch to an OB before the end of the first trimester. I was "released" to the OB at 9 weeks and she felt that was a little late. Maybe see if you can make the switch around 8 weeks, that way you will probably have 2 U/S with the RE. Will they stop the beta's after 5?

@SpanielLove: can all your blood draws be with her? I wonder if that is something you can request....sounds like it would be very much worth asking about!

I'm asking this b/c I really don't know: if there were complications, what could the RE do that an OB cannot? Is it not necessarily the type of care, but more the frequency of visits?

@spaniellove: Great update! There is no reason you can't request a different lab tech. Stand up for yourself and just say, I'm sorry, its not personal, but is there someone else that can do my draw?

Woohoo, the other tech was there this morning! She was much gentler and I realized that the one who's usually there never wipes with alcohol first. This one actually cared that I have a latex allergy and explained what I'll be tested for at my 5th beta (a CBC, clotting disorders, etc), and told me I'll most likely have an ultrasound next week too. I wish all my blood draws could be with her!

Okay, gf, I'd go find an ob! I switched at 8 weeks. They released me as soon as they were able to confirm heartbeat. And my ob accepted patients at 8 weeks. It's one thing if they got you pregnant with ivf or something and they wanted to monitor you for a particular reason....there are end of first trimester testing that u may want to do that the re prolly won't. Good luck! Btw, super smell! I don't miss that! Made me gag a lot haha.

@spaniellove: I think the tech you've had is a huge part of the problem. Not a good communicator! I'd definitely try for the other tech :)

And the smells. Oh g_d, I remember the smells! I'm sorry that you are experiencing that, but it is a good sign that you are having the appropriate hormonal response :)

@Grace: I don't know what's worse to me, noticing something on my own and not having a doctor or nurse I can call or passing up the chance to having every last thing monitored even if there's nothing they could do. There should be a happy medium :(

You can always refuse care. Thing is - if something went wrong, would you feel it was your fault for not sticking with the RE? I mean, even if it would have totally made no difference to the outcome, would you beat yourself up about it?

Btw, I think it's totally unreasonable of them not to give you info on what they are testing and why. You are a patient, not their guinea pig!

@MerryC: I remember seeing a different tech in the late afternoon who had a much better technique and she explained a lot of things to me...it might be worth finding out if she works every afternoon. At this point I can probably live with getting a call back the next morning.

Now off to deal with this horrible smell sensitivity...gross.

I don't think they can TELL you you HAVE to go to them... Unless it's some weird insurance thing. I'd switch! Can your regular gyno be your OB? (Unless you don't want them.) I'd start the hunt for an OB, but keep in mind they may not want to see you right away.

Do you have a regular OB already? I'd say if you can get in with one relatively quickly, it might be ok to switch. A lot of them won't see you til later in the first tri....like 8-10 weeks?, but if you can get one that will keep tabs on you with bloodwork and progesterone and ultrasounds as needed throughout the first tri, I'd go for it.

Is there anyway to request/force better communication from the new RE's office? Do they have nurses or nurse practitioners that you could speak to instead of an RE?

In the end, you need to go where you are going to get quality, attentive care for you and LO.

@spaniellove: But if something wasn't going according to plan, they'd swoop in. If you switch care, they are less likely to be responsive.

Studies show that patients who change providers have less good outcomes... I don't want that to be you!

I also think my RE transitions their patients to their reg OBs after 8wks. I would have a conversation with your OB to see how they feel about getting you back this "early".

I would definitely switch to an OB. Are you going to get ultrasounds in the next two weeks? Maybe go to those and then set up an appointment for after. Seeing an RE through the first trimester seems like an awfully long time to me. My practice lets us go after about 8 weeks, I believe.

I'm dreading going back to my RE's office for my 3rd beta tomorrow and am frustrated with their process. They're making me come in every other day for weeks even though my numbers have been good. That might not bother me so much except that the tech who draws blood there is so forceful...normally I don't feel needle sticks at all, and after working with her my arm throbs the whole way home and the area doesn't heal for days. After months of injecting myself, I may finally be developing a fear of needles thanks to this awful lab tech.

I happened to switch to this clinic 3 days before my BFP so there isn't much history with them but I have learned that the doctors aren't involved in my care anymore and there's no one I can call, for instance, when I had spotting two nights in a row (it turned out to be from the Endometrin I was using). They won't tell me when I can make an appointment with a regular OB but they insist that I have to come in through the end of my first trimester. What the heck? I'd like to have some normal care and not have to consult Dr. Google for everything. I know I need them to tell me when to wean off my progesterone eventually, but is there a way to refuse the constant bloodwork? Somehow I feel like they're both being overly invasive and abandoning me at the same time.
