I went to an OB and got the doctor on call. But you could ask!

I don't know. In my practice I have requested a midwife delivery rather than OB but there are three midwives so I will get whoever is on call. Maybe you can request a midwife delivery and if she is not available there is a back up or hospital midwiife that fills in. Couldn't hurt to ask!

I would check with them because one of the groups I talked to had you decide at some point if you wanted a midwife or on to deliver you. Granted they had several midwives so they had two on call groups going but it can't hurt to ask!

@spaniellove: My preferred midwife wasn't on call when I arrived at the hospital, but in the end, she was on call when I delivered and was the one who caught my baby. I hope the midwife will attend your birth!

@spaniellove: If you become friends with her, you can tell her how much you want her to be your attending and she might come in for you even if she isn't on call. :) I know a few doctors and midwives who will do that.

Maybe...If I go to the hospital (besides for my scheduled c section), there's no telling who is on call. I know that in my office, the doctors have regular days they're at the hospital (my ob surgeon is on call Sun-Mon)

@swedishfish: Aww, I was afraid that might be the case. She did talk about how she planned to have me do a lot of walking since I want a natural birth so I'm hoping she'll be there at some point.

I think it depends on who is on call while you're in labor. I was lucky to have two doctors from my practice during labor and delivery but there wasn't any guarantee I would've known my delivering doctor.

I've been seeing one of the two OBs in the practice, although for the sake of not having any surprises when I go into labor they've started scheduling me with the other OB and the midwife. Although I was skeptical that the midwife would handle my medical issues well, I've been impressed! On a whim I decided to try her suggestion to switch from Zofran to Zantac and OMG my severe nausea is gone! After I've tried to explain my nausea to the MFMs and OBs she is the only one to think of a cause other than "it's normal to be nauseated when you're pregnant". I love her and want her to deliver my baby! Do you think this is something I can request?
