Is it smooth to the touch? If it is, I would rough it up a bit with some sandpaper (wipe it down with a cloth and make sure it's dry and dust free) before spray painting it.

I have heard that paint with primer isn't really paint containing primer, so if you want good results, you'll have to prime it first, possibly sand it, then paint it and seal it.

@T.H.O.U.: Oh good point. I guess I can re-spray it. Or I don't really care since it's not a huge/focal piece or anything... I just don't want it to be black!

@snowjewelz: I would assume just a couple of coat would do it, I haven't got to use the chalk paint spray paint yet, but I love diy, so I know I'll get around to it eventually. The also sell a clear finish that your suppose to spray over it tha t seals it.

@snowjewelz: the only time i ve had issues with spray paint and/or a paint+primer in one is moving parts. So be careful about sliding those clips over the rail because over time it will scratch/chip.

@snowjewelz: LOL, I am too! I read this blog post and it helped a lot: http://withheart.com/featured/spray-painting-brass-lamps/

She used a primer and then paint, but the paint + primer in one worked just fine for me. I had to do a couple of coats in a few places, but it was super easy!

@Snowjewelz Rust-Oleum makes a paint and primer in one that comes in several different finishes. I just spray painted an old brass lamp base and it came out great!

Yes! They even sell chalk paint spray paint now that would probably work awesome! If not that you just use a spray paint formulated for metal. It usually says on the can! That's super cute btw.

I got this at Target on clearance and it's steel. I want to spray paint it white though.. Is that ok? I am totally clueless to anything DIY/craft! Tell me what to get and what to do to make it white!
