If your prolactin levels are elevated because of nursing then yes, it could possibly prevent pregnancy.

It can for some people, and not for others. Since you've had regular periods, you're likely to be ok. I'd try for a few months, and then if you don't catch, consider weaning.

@Kemma: do you mind me asking if you noticed you were ovulating when you were still irregular?
@thestartermum: my cycle didn't come back until a few months after we cut down to 1 time per day nursing. I guess some peoples bodies are very sensitive!

I got my period back at 22 months post partum, on CD 19 and no signs of ovulation (physical signs or OPK's). We're down to one time a day nursing and my LO would still love to nurse more. For me, I'm beginning to think I will have to completely wean.
From what I have read, since you've had you cycle back for quite some time, and it's regular you should be ok! Checking into your luteal phase by charting would be great if you have trouble. As well, I've heard that vitex helps some women with short luteal phases. Good luck!

I got my period back 2 months PP but I was unable to get pregnant while nursing even when I was only nursing once a day. As soon as I weaned I got pregnant. Many women have opposite experiences though. Good luck!

@thestartermum: I got mine back at 10 months and my LO wasnt (and still isn't) sttn. Night weaning does bring it back for some people, but others get it back regardless and some have to wean completely. Unfortunately, I think it's impossible to know.

@thestartermum: I got AF back at 15 months when LO really started stretching out her night sleep. My first few cycles were irregular but we got pregnant at around 21 months or so and I was still nursing 3-4 times a day.

@thestartermum: depends on your definition of STTN. at six months he would sleep in stretches of 3-7 hours, and basically had MOTN nursing sessions until he was 13-14 months. And occasionally until now he still wakes up in MOTN though stopped asking for milk a few months ago? Not sure exactly

I hope this isn't rude to ask but you said you got your period back at 6 months? Was your little one sleeping through the night? I want to TTC but still haven't had a period after 11 months.

thanks everyone. good to know about the short luteal phase as i did not know that before. I will probably keep nursing the next couple of months and if i don't get a BFP, i will look into weaning. Same with charting, etc.

I would start by assuming that if you are having regular cycles your typical fertility has returned. If, after some trying, you feel like breastfeeding might be having an effect on fertility, you can discuss it further with your doctor. Ellie was still nursing when I became pregnant with Lorelei. I was having regular cycles, and she was typically nursing three times or less per day (though I think having a regular period is more predictive than the amount of nursing sessions). Charting doesn't sound too shabby, either. At the very least, it gives you some additional information for you (and your doctor) both now and down the road. Good luck!!

A friend of mine had to completely wean before she was able to get pregnant. She was ovulating but her luteal phase was too short to sustain a pregnancy. Then I know others (myself included) who were able to get pregnant while breastfeeding. I nurse my 17.5 month old 1-3 times a day. Everyone is SOO different. Good luck!!

@Zbug: I didn't realize about the shorter luteal phase. All the more reason to chart, I suppose!

I agree that you're probably ovulating if your cycles are regular. BFing can also cause shorter luteal phases, which can make it harder to get pregnant, but you probably need to chart to find out if that's happening.

I think as long as your cycles are regular, you're probably ovulating and therefore not nursing enough to prevent a pregnancy. Could you start using OPKs or temp to confirm O? Wishing you lots of luck! :goodluck:

I know that you can get pregnant anytime while breastfeeding but from what I understand it is less likely while nursing. Is that because your cycle is typically not regular and therefore you may not be ovulating? Or is it something else to do with breastfeeding?

I nurse my 24 month old 1-2 times a day and he doesn't seem ready to wean at all. Now that we are TTC, I'm wondering if it is necessary to wean (or will better my chances of a BFP if I do).

I got my period back at 6 months pp and it has been regular for the past year. So I'm kind of hoping I don't have to worry about weaning just yet (mainly because I have no clue how I'm going to wean him) and I want to get pregnant ASAP.
