@mrs. wagon: It's probably like West Elm's system, where you buy the headboard separate from the frame? The holes in the headboard are where the frame would attach with screws. If you look at the bedroom gallery, it looks like the headboards are all meant to go with frames and they don't actually mean that legs attach directly onto the mattress - some of their language is kind of funky!

@mrs. wagon: Oh. Yeah, I've never purchased a bed where the head board was separate. I think I would be just as confused as you. Haha.

@mrs. wagon: I think all upholstered headboards are generally sold separately!

@bluestriped bee: Oh, those rails...we've had two different non-Ikea beds with those rails and used one w/o a box spring because it was clearly meant to be a platform height bed and the other with a low profile box spring.

Thanks Friends!! I think I'm getting a clearer picture.

@bluestriped bee: the setup that confused me had this headboard and boxspring:
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/30207042/

And it said "legs sold separately" so I was so confused. I guess the legs attach directly to the boxspring? Or to some kind of frame of rails that you also purchase?

@mrs. wagon: Do you know which bed you were looking at? http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/categories/departments/bedroom/16284/

It might help us figure out if your bed comes with a head board or not.

I don't know if this helps but I know some Ikea beds require you to buy rails that go across the bed frame. It supports the mattress and, also, it doesn't require that you need a box spring.

There's a picture of an Ikea bed with rails here. http://dragonballyee.com/blog/2006/05/21/ikea-aspelund-bed-frame/

We have a memory foam mattress and it simply goes on top of the wooden rails on our bed frame. No need for a box spring for our queen sized bed. Not sure about king sized beds since I don't have one.

I'm probably not answering this question correctly, but our king mattress is on two twin box springs, and the whole thing is in a bed frame like any other size bed. I think whether or not you attach a headboard separately (like our guest bed has) is a matter of your style of bed and not the size?

Our King has a regular bed frame - headboard and footboard with frame you set the boxspring/mattress in type setup like any other size bed :)

The boxspring is split on our King, as was split on our Queen as well. Living in New England, you know how teeny our staircases can be; a split boxspring is pretty necessary to get your bed into many places (since the box doesn't bend like a mattress does).

Many IKEA Kings don't require a boxspring at all, so maybe that's what you were seeing?

We have one bed frame and yes there are two box springs (each one is the same size as a twin box spring). I'm assuming they make them that way because it would be impossible to get a single king size box spring up a set of stairs. We don't have a real bed though. Just the frame/box spring/ mattress and a headboard we DIY'd

@mrs. wagon: hehe there are regular bed frames for king beds too! But king beds always have two smaller box frames. Our California king is actually sitting in a larger king ikea frame. Not all their frames are the same size!

I was browsing beds at Ikea today and couldn't really figure out king-sized beds. Our bed is the only bed we've ever bought, and it has a headboard, footboard, and rails with a boxspring that sits on top (on the edges of the rails). From the looks of the beds at Ikea (that were not the super low platform beds, which is not ideal for us), You purchase 2 boxsprings, attach legs to them, and attach a separate headboard?

I'm so confused! Googling, too, but not really getting anywhere.
