I've never watched the music video, but this is one of my favorite Maroon 5 songs. Based purely on the lyrics (still haven't clicked on that video) I always thought it was about the guy who is the best friend. "He was always there to help her, she belonged to someone else". He was always there for her, he knows her, he understands her, and is saying (from afar, or in his mind) that he will always be there for her - that he sees her pain, her brokenness, the bits and pieces that make up who she is, and loves her no matter what ("I know where you hide alone in your car/ Know all of the things that make you who you are"). </p> <p>She is the girl who probably takes him for granted, and only sees him as the best friend but nothing more. The song has this meaning/ring to me...</p> <p>I think it's a guy talking about a girl that he loves that either doesn't love him the same anymore, or is so down on herself that she can't really love anyone ("had some trouble with herself" "girl with a broken smile", etc) - he's probably talking about them being friends with benefits or may be talking about a deep friendship he wants to turn into something more ("she always belonged to someone else" "I've bad you so many times" etc). </p> <p>I think the essence of the song is that he loves her and will always love her. Or he's having an affair with them both, but then the mom gets jealous and flips out and the girlfriend finds out?</p> <p>Argh, why is Adam making out with his 18-year-old girlfriend's mom?! This is the weirdest video of all time. </p>
