My LO was like this. Daycare informed me that they would be moving her from the infant room to the toddler room because she was walking 90% of the time now and I was like, "Wait....She can walk????" She never walked for us at home! She'd also refuse to walk at daycare if DH and I were in the room! Her teachers would try to coax her and she would just crawl or sit and cry and refuse to stand! Within the last couple weeks she has been walking more and more for us. I think she just liked being carried and being baby worn at home!

@septmama12 - you can try "tricking" him into walking more. Have him hold onto one end of a stick or straw or something similar and start walking with him, then slowly let go so he's walking on his own. This worked a few times with the other girl I was working with, then she'd figure it out and would get really mad and refuse to do it again. So it may or may not work, but could be worth a try. A colleague of mine has also used a hula hoop, holding one end and the child holding the other.

my LO is 13.5 months and cannot stand byhimself yet....or doesn't know he can. He can hold onto the fabric on my pants and stand freely like that, and he cruises casually with one hand. but he seems to have stayed in this phase for a few months now so i am starting to wonder. Today i actually did see him stand byhimself for a couple of seconds and it was because he let go of a toy momentarily. i don't think he even realized he was hands free for a second!

all that to say, i don't think LOs are "lazy" at this stage. my guess would be that they don't really know what they are capable of and/or don;t have the confidence to try. My LO also uses his push walker at lightening speed and loves it! So I imagine he will love walking once he realizes he can do it and the freedom that comes with it.

I know i need to do more of what @lemondrop: says by enticing with him with toys that would require free standing or walking.

my LO is 15 months and also a reluctant walker. she loves her push stroller (essentially runs and man handles it!).

she's got a super cautious personality, though - she's terrified of toys that move that aren't supposed to (catch me kitty, and hates the rockin tunes giraffe), is terrified of people she doesn't feel comfortable with that get close to her, etc.

I try to "make" her and she just drops to her hands and knees. I feel like aside from making her feel safe/confident there is nothing else I can do! we have her 15-m appt next week so I'll let the dr know, but I'm not going to pursue EI or anything like that.

I think she's just nervous..but I think once she goes, she'll be a pro!

@BeachMama: That's him exactly. If you ask him to walk to you, he just shakes his head and starts crawling. He'll do 3-4 steps from his chair to us, and he seems really proud of himself, but he won't do any further. Thanks for the ideas!

I'm a PT and one of my pediatric patients was like your son. She could walk well, but would only do it holding someone's hand. If you tried to get her to walk on her own she would freak out, melt down, and refuse to walk. I think for her it was a fear/confidence thing where she didn't want to do it until she felt 100% confident with it. So we worked on just doing 1-2 steps from me to the couch and very slowly over time increased the distance til one day she was walking on her own (I think she was around 18 months).

I'd say if he's walking along the wall or with the push toy then keep letting him to that. Try not to carry him, as much as you can. Eventually he'll figure out that walking is probably more efficient than anything else.

Wow, I don't think he's lazy. My daughter was very similar, she hit all of her physical milestones at the latest end of normal. She did eventually start walking at 16 months, but took another month before she was doing it full time. Now at 27 months she runs constantly. It didn't have anything to do with laziness - she just wasn't ready.

If it were me, I would place certain enticing toys or treats in areas that he would have to branch out on his own to get (away from the walls) and I would hide the push walker for a while to make him do it himself. Ultimately every baby/toddler goes at their own pace, but I find that outsmarting my little guy is one of my biggest challenges ;) Mine has cautious moments until he builds his confidence up, once he knows he can do it, he's all over it.

The only thing I can think of right at this moment is that he's nervous about walking for some reason? We spent some time with my parents who don't have carpet (we do) and dd seemed a bit more motivated after that... It WILL happen though!!

LO (15 months) has definitely been late on the physical milestones. Didn't crawl until 12.5 months, and didn't pull himself to stand until 13.5 months. The general consensus from his day care teachers and even his doctor is that he is lazy. (And I have to admit that I agree.) Why get himself around when he can be carried... We even started physical therapy when he wasn't crawling and the therapist told us we were basically wasting our money because there's absolutely nothing wrong with him besides not wanting to do it!

So a few days before Thanksgiving (at about 14.5 months), he took his first steps, and we were obviously psyched. But he hasn't gotten much past that in the month since. He tears around the house at roadrunner speed using his push walker, and he walked the length of the entire mall today holding my hand. He also walks from room to room in our house using the wall. But he absolutely refuses to walk on his own beyond 3-4 steps...and even that requires a lot of coaxing.

He's a big boy - 28 lbs - and my back is killing me. Any advice to encourage him to take those steps on his own? Anyone else have a LO who took a long time to move from first steps to actual walking?

I should also add that he doesn't seem to have a "cautious" personality. He climbs on anything and everything. He just doesn't want to walk by himself!
