I had this a lot during my first pregnancy. I took comfort in the fact that I found that this was not an uncommon pregnancy symptom. It went away immediately after giving birth.

I got heart palpitations rarely (like a few a year) before pregnancy, but now that I'm pregnant I've gotten them more and more the further along I am (a few a week now at 39w). I haven't even mentioned them to my doctor because I was used to them before and knew they weren't a big deal. For mine, I can get them to go away by taking deep breaths for about 30 seconds. If yours don't go away that easily, I would probably be more concerned and bring it up with my doctor.

@Paddington10: I did the same as you--just asked my midwives repeatedly about it. Ha! They were never super worried, and I never really did anything about it. However, there were lots of other things that freaked me out that I DID get checked more thoroughly. If you have a weird feeling about it, definitely talk to your PCP. Can't hurt! :)

I've also had heart palpitations (although this is my first so nothing to compare it to) and my doc said unless it lasts for a long time or becomes very frequent to not worry about it. It's usually just a quick blip, like it skips a beat and then it's back to normal. I've read it can be because of increased blood flow.

No specific advice but my Mum suffers from heart palpitations and I believe that eating lots of potassium-rich foods (bananas, passion fruit etc) can be a good natural treatment.

I've shared this with you before, but I had this a lot during my first pregnancy. I've heard it's due to hormones and blood flow increase. It sounds like it's really freaking you out, though, (which I totally get! our bodies are so weird and it's tough not to worry), so if I were you I'd get it checked out for peace of mind. :)

I had these before and during pregnancy and still have them now. They were def worse while I was pregnant. My midwife was not concerned. I kind of wish I had it looked at while I was pregnant since I had already met my deductible and out of pocket max though! So that's something to consider.

I'd just go see your PCP and see what they suggest. The demand on the heart increases as pregnancy goes along. Not to be an alarmist at all, but it would be good to know if anything is up.
The tests they could/would do would be basically non-invasive (EKG, holter monitor, echocardiogram) and also establish a good baseline for you going forward (as someone with a family history of cardiac events).

ETA: there really is no downside (other than financial depending on your insurance) to having it looked at.

I had this happen when I was in my 3rd tri. My heart would feel like it was pounding like crazy. During my NSTs, I was measuring a high heart rate and low oxygen sat so they ordered an ECG but it came back normal. I would talk to you doc about testing if you are concerned!

I don't really have any advice, but the exact thing happens to me all the time. I've heard it's due to an increase in hormones, but I never brought it up to my doctor. I had them quite frequently before I was pregnant as well.

Hello ladies! This has recently become one of my weird and wacky pregnancy symptoms. (Did not have it with my first.) They started a week ago, at 16 weeks. I'd be lying down, usually on my side before bed, and my heart would flutter or feel like it was skipping a beat, or else beat very hard and fast, then settle down. It's SO SCARY! At first I thought I was having a heart attack. They are so quick though, they're gone before I even have time to dwell. They seem to be worse if I am lying down, or at night.

I went to my OB today and mentioned it, but he didn't seem particularly alarmed. He said my PCP might refer me to a cardiologist, and almost always any testing comes back as normal. He seemed pretty blase about it.

Not sure if I should pursue it or not. I don't want to risk something heart-related (and heart attacks run in my family!), but I have also heard that palpitations happen a lot in the second trimester.

I'd be grateful if anyone else shared their experiences and any treatments that might work! They are freaky!
