I don't love those together but I love that side table so I would still do it and look at trading out the dresser in the future.

Yes, matching is overrated and used to cause me stress when i thought it was necessary!

You can totally mix and match, but I think there is one key to making it work. Repetition! You have to repeat both tones somewhere else. Things look out of place when they're the only thing with a certain attribute/color in the room.

So in your case, I'm thinking, repeat the tones in the frame color of some artwork, in lamps, in a side chair, end of bed bench, accessories, etc. As long as you have multiple black/brown items and multiple medium wood items scattered around the room, I think it can work.

ETA: Adding gold knobs to the hemnes is a great idea! That will repeat the gold on the side tables.

I find most matching bedroom sets to look pretty dated when everything is perfectly matched and I think it lacks any kind of character and design.

I think they key is that the pieces should have a similar element, and they do in the shape. I would change out the knobs on the Hemnes piece, can you spray paint them gold to match the side tables?

I'm definitely a fan of mixing wood pieces, but not these specific pieces. In my opinion, the side tables are too warm and the dresser is too cool-toned for them to work well together.

I've been looking for inspiration pictures, and I haven't really found any that make me feel like this can work. We are looking for bedside tables we like. We currently don't have a headboard and the only other furniture we have in the master is an Ikea Hemnes dresser in black/brown, on the opposite wall across from the bed.

I really love these bedside tables, but the wood is a lighter colors than the dresser. I can't decide if it would still look okay or if it would be a trainwreck to mix woods--not to mention we have wood floors in another color still.

We are also looking for either a headboard or bed--but for that, we're probably going to go upholstered, in either gray, cream, or a grey-taupe color.

Looking at the pics together here, I'm thinking trainwreck. But I love those side tables and the Hemnes is cheap so we aren't going to keep it the rest of our lives--but we will have it in the forseeable future.
