This always makes me lol. Babies need strong flavor any way they can get it! My daughter has had it all her life, and she's a very adventurous eater.

I haven't changed my diet at all - lots of spicy/garlicky foods, especially Mexican, Vietnamese, and Italian, and LO seems perfectly happy with everything.

@Cherrybee
I ate whatever I wanted and it never mattered.

My in-laws are Indian and there are tons and tons of rules about what foods you can and can't eat in the first few weeks of PP and breastfeeding. Cauliflower and bananas are on the no-no list. Chicken, milk and boiled eggs are required eating!

It was a bit tricky for me when MIL was visiting, but I managed to eat mostly what I wanted to since she wasn't here until after about a month PP. (My mom was here at first.)

It depends on your baby, as i know there are lots of moms here who went on elimination diets because their baby was allergic to certain foods.

If there are no issues, i don't see why you can't have the same foods you were eating while you were pregnant. Since i'm asian, garlic, onions and spicy foods are typical in my diet!

I have also heard that eating a variety of foods and flavors increases the likelihood that LO will enjoy those flavors later on.

That was one of my major problems with breastfeeding on such an extreme elimination...LO was exposed to only 3-12 flavors at a time depending on where we were reintroducing foods back into my diet.

@prettylizy: Mmm! Hummus is my all time favourite food!!

Well there we go then! I will tell me MIL that she can make us any delicious casserole she wants to! But... if she makes me any bland garlic free food, baby cuddles will be withdrawn! Lol!

One of the LCs I know told me there was a study done that babies nurse longer after their mothers eat garlic.

I eat whatever spices and flavors I want.

I've heard that eating a variety of spices while breastfeeding actually makes babies more likely to enjoy those types of food later...maybe because they are used to the taste in your milk?

People do say this a lot, but I disagree. I want my child to become accustomed to various flavors, including strong ones. I think it will create an adventurous eater!
Unless I notice specific marked negative effects, I'll be eating as normal. Which includes plenty of garlic and strong international spices!

I still eat normally when bfing - yesterday we had Indian food for dinner, including Chicken Tikka Masala and Chicken Vindaloo. The latter is pretty spicy and no affects on DS so far! And I'm a huge garlic fan so I eat a lot of that too.

I heard eating a variety expands the baby's palate so I always thought it was a good thing to try different spices while bfing, but I'm sure every baby responds differently. I wouldn't change anything unless you notice a difference in your baby's behavior.

We went to my mother in law's house today and she said that she couldn't sleep last night because she worrying about what meals to make us when the baby is born. She said that all her go-to casserole recipes are out because they contain garlic - and you can't eat garlic while you are breastfeeding. She went on to claim that you also can't eat anything with chilli in it either.

What????

I was planning to just eat my normal diet and only cut things out if and when I noticed that they upset baby's tummy.....

What did you do? Did you find that garlic or chilli or any other strongly flavoured food upset your baby's tummy, give them gas or put them off drinking the milk?
