It depends. If you are driving at the onset of contractions, then they start a little slower (typically) and you would likely be okay. By the time I went to the hospital several hours into labor, no I wouldn't have been able to drive at that point.

I think if you do happen to go into labor you'll be fine enough to get somewhere safe. My contractions started and felt like intense cramps for a couple of hours, and that was considered a fast progression into active labor. I would have been able to drive safely.

As PPs have said, it is not that strong in the beginning so you won't get into an accident don't worry!

Contractions usually build up and dont start very strong which is why some people arent even sure at first if they are in labor or not, so you should be able to pull over and/or drive yourself home or to some safe place nearby.

They probably won't start out super strong. So if you're driving you'll have some warning by smaller contractions, and you can hopefully drive to someone or pull over and make them come to you.

I wouldn't have done it. I had been having contractions for about 24 hours before I went to the hospital. Those were all fine and I could have driven fine (though my husband even drove me to the Drs appointment that day because he didn't like the idea of me driving through light contractions). But we didn't go to the hospital till after my water broke. Contractions quickly went from irritating to wow, this is really painful. It was a surprise. I think probably I could have stayed in enough control over a car but also think it would have been unwise and unnecessary to try, lots of people will go out of their way to escort a pregnant lady having a baby.

ETA: I misread I thought you were talking about driving yourself to the hospital. Contractions usually start out light so you should have some warning that you should get home or somewhere and let someone else do the driving.

Contractions to me felt like SUPER intense cramps. I would have been able to drive myself to the hospital if I had to.
