The issue is definitely the waking after one sleep cycle. The problem is when she falls asleep she is warm, comfortable, and nursing only to find herself alone, on a firm surface. Imagine how disconcerting that would be for you to wake up in a completely different (and less comfortable) environment than the one where you fell asleep. In "The No-Cry Sleep Solution" they compared this to an adult falling asleep in a nice, warm bed with blankets, pillows, etc. and then waking up on the kitchen floor all alone, sans blanket. She's definitely at an age when she notices these differences, which makes it that much more upsetting for her. I would try to get away from nursing to sleep because if that is the only way she falls asleep then she will have a harder time learning to self-soothe. If you didn't consider nursing to sleep a problem, I wouldn't mention it, but you are overall asking advice about this sleep issue.

@travelgirl1: we don't put her in like wide awake lol, that prob wouldn't go over we'll! She usually falls asleep while nursing, but I make an effort to make sure she is awake and knows she is in the crib...usually by changing her diaper will wake her but she will still be drowsy and ready for bed, then she normally just goes right to sleep or fusses a few mins and falls asleep....baby sleep is so stressful!!

@littlebittyhouse: Thank you so much, I'll definitely look at those!

@NovBaby1112: Our timings are about the same as yours - she's ready to sleep after about 90 minutes and if it goes past two hours she's looking pretty pissed off : ) It does make sense about the nurse to sleep issue, I'll have to try and break that, but I think she'd go nuts if I put her in her crib awake. Worth a try though!

@Weagle: She definitely acts ready to go down to bed for the night at about 6pm-ish. When she wakes up after that, she's not gearing up for another cycle of diaper-eat-play, she seems really tired like she just wants to go back to sleep.

@hilsy85: This is exactly how it seems to me too. I'm just not sure how to break it!

@LuLu Mom: Our doctor recommended CIO but we're just not ready for that yet. Really hope we can sleep train in a no cry way but I guess the jury's still out on that one : )

Agreed that LO is having a hard time putting themselves to sleep after a sleep cycle. I would bring it up to your doctor at your next appointment to see if they have any tips. But I will say that at 16 weeks our LO was still stayign awake until 9-10 pm and then she would sleep until 6 am, so it might be too early to start bed time and expect a good solid chunk of sleep? She woudl nap for an hour or two from 6-7.

Sounds like she's waking up at the end of one sleep cycle and can't put herself back to sleep. LO often wakes up angry and upset at the 45 minute mark during naps and he's obviously still tired.

We've been nursing/bottle to sleep since 9 months and haven't had a problem yet. I agree with a pp that the early bedtime couldl be the culprit. At that age, LO was taking a cat nap from 5-6 and going to bed at 8-8:30.

@travelgirl1: what is the amount of time between her last nap and bedtime? I know for my LO, she can't stay awake for more than 2 hours before bed or else she has a total meltdown and wakes up 45 min after she goes to sleep. We normally put her in her crib awake at the 90 min mark. Agree with @littlebittyhouse that she has a nurse to sleep association and when you put them in the crib fully asleep, they often wake up confused and wondering where they are, because they fell asleep in your arms. One book I read on sleep said its like you falling asleep in your bed, someone moving you into a field without you knowing, and then you waking up wondering wtf lol. Does that make sense?

The link is to (free!) webinars that really helped us nail bed time. Each one is about 20 minutes long.

I'd watch them in this order:
Oct 2 - Sleep and nap patterns Birth - 5 months
Oct 30 - Bedtime routines 6 weeks - 18 months
Nov 27 - Trading down for infants and toddlers

A couple of things that work for us:
We read the same two books in the same order every night
After books I nurse and he usually falls asleep - I break the pattern by using gauze to clean his gums, giving him his vitamin d and then putting him in his sleep sack. That way he's really full but awake/drowsy when he goes into his crib.

Let me know if you have any questions! I am obsessed with sleep!

@MamaMoose: I wondered that at first but she definitely acts ready to go down for the night, and when she wakes up upset, she seems very tired, not as though she wants to get up etc.

How old is your LO? If she is over 4mo the nursing to sleep is most likely a sleep association. It means that because your baby falls asleep nursing she expects to nurse to sleep when she wakes up. We traded down the association of nursing to sleep pretty quickly and easily. Happy to give you more info if you want it!

Perhaps you're started bedtime too early? M still doesn't go to bed for the night until around 9. But she pretty reliably sleeps ten hours straight through. Between the hours of 6 and 9 she basically cluster feeds. It can wear on me but getting her belly so full at the end of the day definitely helps her sleep!

We have started a bedtime routine with A (16 weeks old) that involves a sponge wash, story, quiet play in our dimly lit bedroom and nursing. She usually goes to sleep that way (while nursing) at about 6-6.30pm, then I hold her until she's in a deeper sleep then try to put her down. She wakes up about 45 minutes later really upset - like REALLY upset!

While she's this upset I hold her, perhaps nurse her, sing to her, talk to her but keep her in the dimly-lit bedroom with me. Sometimes she calms down and goes back to sleep, but sometimes she can cry for a long time. I've given up walking up and down with her because I think it prolongs the agony.

Do you know why she might be SO upset? I don't think she's in pain or anything like that.
