At 3 and 18 months, sure I can leave to go to the bathroom or something but not when my younger one was a baby. A few times we were in the same room and I had the baby in the bouncer and when I turned my back for a second my older one was sitting on him! But it does get much better I promise! I think once they are able to start walking...at least then my younger one wouldn't leave my side so there was no chance for trouble!

This thread is incredibly timed! Umm, no. She's too wild. I just stepped out of the room for a minute to fetch her a drink and she leapt up, jumped up and down on the sofa and, just as I came into the room, smacked her head off the wall. I only just caught her in time before she fell off the sofa.

Its exhausting!

As long as I set them up with activities I can pop in another room for a bit. They only have access to baby proofed rooms. DD1 used to hug/tackle the baby, but she's gotten much better about it lately. I can't leave them long enough to shower, but I can move the laundry or clean the kitchen.

dear lord, I have another 10 or more months of this?! I can't leave DD alone with DS at all- she is constantly ALL over him and in his face. I really thought by like, 3months, it would be better/easier!

I have a two-year old and an 8 month old. I leave them alone for 5-10 minutes at a time, either together or individually. After that amount of time, either (1) one of them comes looking for me; (2) there is crying or something has crashed; (3) there is silence and I get _very_ nervous :)

I can leave them alone for hours now. But when LO2 was a baby, I didn't. LO1 was always pretty gentle, but I didn't want to chance anything. I just did quick things like go to the bathroom.

I can leave LO1 alone (almost 3). LO2 is very active, aka will be in the trash, will be eating toilet paper, dog food, etc. for that reason alone i can't leave him by himself for long periods of time

@sorrycharlie: Going through a super similar stage right now. DS1 is 2.5 and DS2 is 14 months and they love to hug and wrestle. Also DS2 tends to grab on to his brothers hair and pull and DS1 laughs about it. Ugh. (addressing that, don't worry!)

ANyway, the way that I get things done in other rooms, like doing the dishes, or running down to the basement to advance laundry, is to put the 14 month old in the bouncy chair that hangs in the large doorway, and to put a show on. I can't trust them alone together without the chair, and I can't trust the 14 month old mobile anyway because he still has no sense of danger.

Yes, my oldest is really gentle and caring towards his brother. LO2 is the rough child who attempts to sit on LO1 and wrestle him to the ground. They play well together but fight like normal siblings. That's when I intervene and try to talk out the problem.

@PawPrints: oh totally...i'm hoping it'll click soon! she just replies in the saddest voice, "but I just LOVE her!" or "but I just need to give her a kiss!" ...it doesn't help that the baby laughs hysterically when she does this, which encourages her. sigh..

That is really cute. But you probably will need to address it at some point with your 3-year-old, right? Respecting boundaries/personal space and all that?

My DD is only 7 months; I have no issue leaving her alone for a minute. She isn't crawling yet and isn't mobile. Once she's crawling we'll have to get the PnP back out I imagine, if we ever want to be able to walk away from her.

Yes, if I put something really exciting on tv (usually a YouTube documentary about elephants or penguins, right now), they will not destroy the house or themselves while I take a fast shower. They stay in the baby gate area in the living room.

Same issue here, I can't really leave the two of them together alone because I don't trust my 3 year old not to smother the baby or swing her swing too hard or try to pick her up, etc.

For a littttle bit. Like, a minute, haha.

DD is 11 months and she has gated play area in the living room so we can quickly walk away to do something if we need to, except she is stage 5 clinger these days and starts to get mad/wail when we leave her alone!

there was really no short way to phrase this question for a title lol..

I have a 3 year old and a 10 month old. Being that I'm on my second go-round, my anxiety has WAY lessened and I definitely will get things done while they play (usually same room). I can't leave the room for a second, though, because my 3 year old is soooo intense in her love for the baby. she hugs her (chokes her..) around the neck and literally tackled her once. I struggle with addressing it because I don't want her to feel badly for being affectionate, but MAN..take it down a notch!! she genuinely just cannot keep her hands (and lips) off the baby.

I look forward to the day when my youngest can hold her own and I can blink without someone wrestling someone else to the ground :P
