So I got them to deduct the cost of the new part. I'm fine with paying for the service fee so that's a start!

We had an electrician come out and charged us for the house call - he told us that if we used him he would deduct that fee from the final bill - so I say YES, ask!!

We got a quote from an electrician for some work, my husband thought it was too much, so he called around and comparison shopped.

Turns out we were quoted a fair price and we used the original electrician.

@LindsayInNY: Yeah, but when you hire someone to do something, it's pretty much them saying they'll do it for you for a price. Since it didn't actually fix it, they didn't do anything for you.

I'm sure you can negotiate this...since it's going to be a pretty big bill in the end.

@Dandelion: @swedishfish: That's what I was thinking. My only concern is I don't think they ever really promised that it would fix things?

Yeah try it. Tell them that it didn't work and ask exactly that...if you can apply the amount towards the major repair.

It's definitely possible. We are currently negotiating with our security system company because a sensor has been acting iffy since it was installed. They want us to pay for the service call but nothing was fixed and it's still happening.

We've been having some semi-emergency electrical problems. And electrician came out last Monday and performed a maybe temporary repair. He said it could last a month, year, five years, anything's possible. It lasted five days - until Friday. Then started up again. And it's definitely a borderline emergency issue. We also got a quote for what's suppose to be a final repair. About $2,000+ repair. Today I get a bill - $75 for the part and $150 for the service call/labor. I'm kinda miffed because nothing was fixed. It was basically like a bandaid on the issue. We plan on hiring them to do the extensive work. Anyone know of I can negotiate the current bill? Get a credit towards future work or a refund of the part since it didn't help. Has anyone tried negotiating with a contractor? Can you?
