Thanks, everyone. I think I might hold off on putting baby to sleep in hats, at least for a few months, and revisit when he's a bit older and the weather is at its coldest.

@MoonMoon: sorry, just seeing this now! our daughter doesn't sleep in a hat. we do fleece pjs and a fleece sleep sack, and the room is about 68 degrees. I go to a waldorf style playgroup/parenting class, and the teacher said she put her kids in wool hats, specifically the kind that tie under their chin. I did think that sounded kind of strange/risky, but I'm not sure how any other hat would stay on?

@MoonMoon: I would. Or get more information from reputable sources. I just know when I googled "baby sleeping in hat" it primarily came up with SIDS risks and links.

@Mrs. Twine: oh thank you for the clarification! We do have some good daytime hats, so I'll pass. Thank you for letting me know about the Sids connection, maybe I have to rethink this...

@MoonMoon: I worry a little about the strings-- it ties under the chin. And I just read that sleeping in a hat is a sids risk. But it's a great daytime hat. We used it under a snowsuit hood or just on its own.

Is it ok to sleep a baby in a fleece hat, or is it too hot? (My husband and I often sleep in hats during the winter, but I'm not sure it's ok for baby!)

Something like this? http://www.polarnopyretusa.com/index/page/product/product_id/878/category_id/47/product_name/THE+BEST+BASIC+ECO+CAP+%28Baby%29

@mrs. wagon: Ha ha, me too! Moon Moon never gets old!

@Mrs. Twine: I would buy it from you, do you think it's ok for overnight/sleeping use? My baby's head is in the 80th percentile for size, and he's almost 5 months.

@MoonMoon: I second @Silva: 's recommendation. We had one in the smallest size and it fit Lorelei (tiny head) until she was a year old. They are wonderful hats, and very warm. I think I still have hers if you want a steal. It's green.

@MoonMoon: I just had to comment because every time I see your user name I start laughing!! haha.

My LOs both had big heads but by 6 months we stopped using hats.. but we keep their rooms pretty warm. I think it's because they both moved around so much so the hat would come off no matter what. So I wish I had a recommendation for you since I have big-headed LOs too!! sorry. But your username still makes me laugh. :)

Oh thank you, will look for the P&P one! What size do you recommend? I think our LOs have similar sized heads!

we just got a great merino wool one from smartwool. at first I thought it was going to be too small, but it is really stretchy and long, so you can fold/roll it to customize the size. My daughter is 6.5 months now, and has a slightly larger than average head (I forget- maybe 70%) and it fits her well. I think because its so stretchy it will continue to work.
It came with mittens, too!

We also have the zutano fleece/ faux fur bomber hat which is the cutest thing ever. Its a tad strangely sized, I got the 18 month size and it was definitely the right choice but the hat is sort of long, so it falls over her eyes. BUt its really cute. The Smartwool one is definitely better when I need a hat for warmth rather than fashion.

ETA: Okay, disregard all of this. I just saw its for sleeping. I would recommend a merino wool pilots cap. I think Polarn o Pyret has them? They stay on well and are cozy.

As our nights are getting colder, I really need a hat for my baby to sleep in. Unfortunately, it seems that many hats run small or shrink in the wash, so I'm afraid to order one without a recommendation. I need it to be warm, soft so it's ok to wear at night, not to small, but also snug because he likes to whip his head back and forth at night.

Any recs? I need one that's 6-12 months and true to that size.
